PUEBLO, Colo. (March 1, 2022) – With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, first baseman
Reggie Williams pulled a ball thru the left side of the infield and sent
Zac Hanenberg across home plate to clinch a Colorado State University Pueblo (7-7) 12-11 victory over the University of Mary (5-4) in walk-off fashion. The ThunderWolves now have two wins in the extra innings games played in 2022.
In the early-goings, CSU Pueblo looked to be in control.
Cole Martin dealt well on the mound and tallied five strikeouts through the opening three innings. The Pack took an early 1-0 lead after Williams scored from third off a
Cole Knightley RBI ground out in the second inning.
Mary crossed two runs in the top of the third inning, but the Pack responded in a big way.
Brock Rodrigues started it off after reaching first on a heads-up dropped-third strike. The leftfielder stole second and later scored off a single from
Brady Prewitt.
Two batters later,
Ty Lewis singled to centerfield and scored
Noah Hennings and Prewitt. Lewis soon scored off another single from
Trey Vasquez to total four runs in the bottom frame.
The Pack piled onto their lead in the bottom of the fourth with three more runs. Hennings drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded followed by a hit-by-pitch drawn by Lewis. Vasquez pushed Prewitt across the plate with an RBI groundout to extend the ThunderWolves lead to 8-2 after four innings.
The Marauders offense came back on the ThunderWolves in a big way in the top of the sixth. Mary scored sixed runs off four hits in the inning and took a temporary 9-8 lead over CSU Pueblo.
The Pack were able to find another answer to the Mauraders.
Brodie Blackford tallied two RBIs of a modest single to right and retook the lead for the ThunderWolves. Williams scored off a balk by the Marauders and exited the sixth with an 11-8 lead.
Mary once again responded and tied it up in the top of the seventh with three more runs.
Dylan Weaver took the hill with one out in the seventh and retired all five batters faced in the first 1.2 innings pitched.
Weaver was relieved by
Frank Wierman after two innings pitched. Wierman took care of business and sent the game into the bottom of the ninth tied at 11-11. The Pack could not get any offense going and the game headed into extra innings.
Wierman sat down the Marauders' half-inning in straight order and gave the Pack another opportunity at the bat.
A Marauders error followed by a wild pitch allowed Prewitt advance to second base. Hennings and Lewis each made it aboard to load the bases with no outs.
With one out in the 10th, Williams came in clutch for the Pack. The first baseman fought through a 2-2 count and pulled a pitch thru the left side of the infield. The single scored the pinch-running Hanenberg from third to seal the Pack's thrilling 12-11 victory in 10 innings.
Williams finished his heroic afternoon 2-5 with an RBI and run scored. Lewis racked up a team-high three RBIs while Vasquez tallied two to his line.
Wierman clinched his first win of his career thanks to his quality 1.2 innings pitched.
The ThunderWolves move to 7-7 on the season and look forward to opening up RMAC play Friday at 11 a.m. in Denver against Regis University. The Pack will play the Rangers Friday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. and then will host Regis on Saturday at noon.
