PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 19, 2022) – Saturday featured a historic evening for the Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (20-6, 16-4 RMAC), as the ThunderWolves claimed a 69-52 victory over Fort Lewis College (2-23, 1-18 RMAC) in a Senior Night celebration.
Alisha Davis tied a CSU Pueblo program record eight blocks while she also scored 24 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and nabbed four steals in the Saturday night win.
Jazzy Hughes and
Kansas Watts were honored as seniors in the special night. Watts was recognized for her four years as forward for the ThunderWolves while Hughes was honored after spending the past two seasons with the Pack.
The game against the Skyhawks kicked off with Fort Lewis shooting well from the field. Watts sank the first points for the Pack and received a loud ovation by the Pack crowd in attendance.
After one quarter of play, the ThunderWolves found themselves trailing 14-10. The Pack found their way offensively early in the second quarter after
Morgan Dial kicked off the frame with a 3-pointer off a
Torie Bass assist.
From there, the Pack and Skyhawks traded the lead seven times over the next six minutes. With 2:12 to go in the second quarter,
JaNaiya Davis nailed a layup to kickstart an 8-0 run which was capped off by back-to-back Dial 3-pointers. The ThunderWolves headed into the locker room with a 32-25 lead.
Keeping up the hot streak for the ThunderWolves,
Ro Dominguez drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 35-25 just five seconds into the half.
Alisha Davis soon expanded the lead to 15 points with an impressive and-one bucket underneath the basket. The and-one basket highlighted another 9-0 run for the ThunderWolves.
Following a
Tomia Johnson bucket in the paint followed by another Dial 3-pointer highlighted a 6:58 rout of 17-4. The Pack entered the fourth quarter ahead 49-34 in thorough control.
In the fourth quarter, the ThunderWolves and Skyhawks traded shots for the first four minutes of play until Fort Lewis eventually dwindled the Pack lead down to eight points with 3:01 to go in the game.
Alisha Davis helped squash the comeback attempt with another and-one layup. Hughes then sank a clutch 3-pointer with 1:22 to go in the game to top-off a mild 6-0 run.
Alisha Davis and Johnson got the roaring crowd excited once more with five straight points in the final minute.
The 69-52 win was clinched and Watts and Hughes were subbed out for one final time in Massari Arena with 59 seconds on the clock. On top of the excitement from the win, the two seniors received a roaring standing ovation as they came off Harry H. Simmons Court.
Although the seniors were in the spotlight,
Alisha Davis dominated the game throughout. The junior forward led all players with 24 points, 13 rebounds, eight blocks and four steals. The eight blocks tied a CSU Pueblo program best, originally set on Feb. 3, 2017 by Molly Rohrer. She now has 55 blocks on the season which is the seventh-most ever recorded in a single season by a Pack player.
Dial finished with four-made 3-pointers which totaled 12 points on the night. Dominguez logged seven points and seven rebounds to go. Hughes finished senior night with nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and five points.
The 20th win of the season for the Pack is the first time reaching the mark since
Tommie Johnson took over as head coach of the ThunderWolves. It is also the first time since the 2017-18 season that the Pack have reached the 20-win mark.
CSU Pueblo looks to keep its historic run going into the final week of the season, as the Pack heads to Denver to take on Regis University Friday night at 5:30 p.m. CSU Pueblo concludes its regular season slate Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at No. 9/13 Colorado School of Mines.
