PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 19, 2022) – The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team (4-7) fell to San Francisco State (5-2) 24-1 and 4-3 Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 | CSU Pueblo 1, San Francisco State 24
The opening game of the day saw bad luck for the Pack and strong hitting from the Gators. San Francisco State jumped to an early 3-0 lead through the first two innings.
Unfortunately for the Pack, the Gators piled on 10 more runs in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth to take a 13-0 lead headed into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Finally the Pack bats were able to break through and get on the board.
Kysen Howard got on board with two outs off a double to left center. Howard was brought home off a
Jacob Federico single to give the Pack a run to their credit.
Despite the offensive surge in the fifth, the Gators continued to capitalize at the plate. San Francisco State gained 11 more runs through the final two innings of the game to seal the Pack's 24-1 loss.
Tyson Pallatt, Trey Vasquez, Brady Prewitt, Noah Hennings, Howard and Federico each tallied a hit in the lopsided game.
Game 2 | CSU Pueblo 3, San Francisco State 4 (8 Innings)
The ThunderWolves were able to turn things around in the second game of the day.
Edwing Corrales got the nod on the mound for the Pack and started things off smoothly for the hosts.
Corrales surrendered only two hits in the first two innings and setup the Pack batters in the bottom of the second with a 0-0 ballgame.
The bottom of the second kicked off with a triple from
Trey Vasquez to deep centerfield. Vasquez's triple was followed up two batters later with a
Matt Shea double to left centerfield. The Shea double scored Vasquez with ease and rejuvenated the strong Pack crowd in attendance.
Shea then scored from second thanks to another RBI double to right field from
Ty Lewis. Finally,
Manny Sierra gave one more double, this time with two outs. Lewis waltzed home from second base and put the Pack ahead 3-0 after the second inning.
Corrales surrendered a run in the top of the third but the Pack were able to hold a 3-1 lead. He remained on the mound settled in for the fourth inning and retired the side in three batters thanks to a smooth double play by Federico and Vasquez.
Still with a 3-1 lead headed into the fifth inning, Corrales sat down the visitors' side in order with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the fifth, Sierra and Hennings each tallied hits, but they were to no prevail.
After not manufacturing runs in the fifth, the Gators tallied another homer and tied up the ballgame at 3-3 after six innings of play. Once again in the top of the seventh, the Gators looked to blow the game open after loading the bases with one out.
Frank Wierman came on the mound in relief for the Pack and struck out two straight batters to send the game into the bottom of the seventh tied at 3-3.
CSU Pueblo was unable to score in the bottom half of the seventh and pushed the game to extra innings.
Unfortunately for the Pack, the Gators were able to push a run across home plate to take a late 4-3 lead headed into the decisive bottom of the eighth. CSU Pueblo was unable to answer and ultimately dropped game two of the doubleheader 4-3.
Lewis led the Pack hitters with a 2-2 performance at the plate with a run scored and another batted in. Although Corrales did not get the decision, the redshirt sophomore pitched 6.1 innings and racked up seven innings.
CSU Pueblo closes out the four-game series with San Francisco State Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in one final nine-inning bout.
