PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 18, 2022) – A revenge game win was clinched by the Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (19-6, 15-4 RMAC) Friday night, as the ThunderWolves beat the Western Colorado squad (10-13, 8-10 RMAC) 63-49. After winning only three games in the 2020-21 season, the ThunderWolves' 16-win improvement marks the greatest turnaround in CSU Pueblo basketball history.
Â
Despite the loud and rambunctious CSU Pueblo home crowd, the Mountaineers came out firing on all cylinders from the 3-point mark. The Pack found themselves in an 14-4 deficit with just over six minutes to go in the first quarter and tried to trim the Western lead.
Â
Despite Western only missing one 3-pointer in the opening quarter, a deep shot at the buzzer byÂ
Ro Dominguez kept the ThunderWolves' deficit fewer than 10 points after the opening quarter.
Â
Entering the second quarter trailing 22-14, the Pack jumped back on offense with a vengeance.Â
Alisha Davis started off the quarter with four straight points. The Mountaineers responded but the ThunderWolves were tenacious.
Â
With 5:33 to go in the second quarter,Â
Amaya Lewis nailed a layup in the lane and kickstarted a 19-2 run that would stretch through the end of the quarter. Lewis was responsible for nine of the 19 points which put the Pack on top 37-29 over the Mountaineers.
Â
Out of the break, the Pack kept up their hot-streak from the first half. A couple minutes into the quarter, Davis hit four-straight points to start a 14-0 burst.Â
Tomia Johnson, Davis, Lewis andÂ
Jazzy Hughes all joined in on the 14-0 dominant run.Â
Â
Johnson hit one more layup as time wound down in the third quarter and claimed a 20-point lead headed into the final quarter of play in command of the game.
Â
In the middle quarters, the Pack only surrendered 11 total points.
Â
Off the back of dominant defensive play by the ThunderWolves, CSU Pueblo was able to clinch the win with ease. Although the Mountaineers outscored the Pack in the final quarter, the outcome was never in doubt as the ThunderWolves coasted to a 63-49 win over Western Colorado.
Â
The win over Western featured strong defensive play from the Pack, as CSU Pueblo did not allow any double-digit scorers in the night.
Â
Lewis shot lights-out for the ThunderWolves off the bench, as the junior guard tallied a game-high 20 points off 9-12 shooting from the field and added on two steals.Â
Â
Davis sank 16 points on the night off eight-made field goals. The junior forward added to her performance with a season-high seven steals and another five blocks to lead the Pack's defensive charge.
Â
Kansas Watts and Dominguez each scored eight points to round out the Pack scoring efforts.
Â
The Pack have 19-wins on the season to set the best mark since the 2017-18 season when CSU Pueblo tallied 25 victories.
Â
Following the win over Western, the Pack look to close their home slate Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. against Fort Lewis College. The Saturday night contest will honor all CSU Pueblo basketball alumni, as well as the 2021-22 seniors,
Jazzy Hughes and
Kansas Watts.Â
