Pack Fall in Overtime to Westminster at the Buzzer

PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 11, 2022) – The No. 25 Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (18-6, 14-4 RMAC) was upset by Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) foe Westminster College (13-6, 12-3) 70-69 in overtime Friday evening. The heartbreaking overtime loss snaps a four-game win streak by the ThunderWolves.

The night saw much back-and-forth early on in the match-up. Westminster eventually jumped to a five-point lead before the Pack surged back. An Amaya Lewis 3-pointer put the ThunderWolves trailing 11-10 with just over three hours to go in the opening quarter. The Griffins held off the ThunderWolves modest run and put CSU Pueblo in a 15-12 deficit after a quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the ThunderWolves' offense woke up with a 7-0 run over the course of a minute capped off by a Morgan Dial 3-pointer. Unfortunately for the Pack, the Westminster team would not go away. CSU Pueblo entered the locker room at halftime behind 26-24.

Out of the halftime break, Ro Dominguez got the thunderous Massari home crowd behind the Pack thanks to a 3-point bucket. Dominguez's triple kickstarted an 11-3 run that featured threes from Tomia Johnson, JaNaiya Davis and Dominguez.

The 11-3 run allowed the Pack to enjoy one of their largest leads of the evening, ahead 38-29. The Griffins stormed back with a 10-2 run of their own. Alisha Davis hit two layups to end the quarter and give the ThunderWolves a 42-39 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

Once again, the Pack tried to put away the Griffins but to no prevail. JaNaiya Davis hit a jumper followed by a steal and a layup. The quick four points allowed CSU Pueblo to take a five-point lead and get the rambunctious crowd on its feet.

After back-and-forth play, the Pack got their largest lead of the evening with 3:58 to go in the fourth quarter, ahead 55-45. To CSU Pueblo's misfortune, the hosts were unable to stave off the Griffins offensive surges and saw itself in a tie after a Westminster layup with 15 seconds to go.

JaNaiya Davis was able to squeeze off a 3-point shot as regulation expired but the shot bounced off the rim and sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Alisha Davis got the ThunderWolves going early. The Griffins then jumped back ahead with a handful of baskets of their own. After falling behind by a point, Jazzy Hughes came up big for the ThunderWolves and hit a 3-pointer with 2:06 remaining. JaNaiya Davis followed the Hughes basket with another 3-point shot with 1:38 to go in the overtime period to put the Pack ahead by five.

Following the tragic theme for the game, the Griffins answered with a 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining in the game. Ahead by two, Lewis prevented a game-tying basket with a block and rebound.
Westminster forced a missed 3-pointer by the Pack and made one more attempt at the game. With just one second to go, the Griffins hit the go-ahead 3-point basket and sealed the CSU Pueblo loss.

The gut-wrenching loss in overtime dropped the Pack's overall record to 18-6 and their RMAC record to 14-4.

Senior JaNaiya Davis led the ThunderWolves with 19 points off a 8-13 shooting performance from the field. Davis added six rebounds and two steals to her line.

Alisha Davis scored 11 points to help the Pack's offensive efforts while the junior tacked on three steals and a block. Lewis and Hughes each added on nine points while Hughes also dished out a team-high five assists.

Following the tough loss in overtime, the Pack are back in action Feb. 19 at home against Western Colorado at 5:30 p.m. followed by another match-up on the 20th against Fort Lewis at 5:30 p.m.
