SALT LAKE CITY (Oct. 14, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo volleyball team had their work cut out for them against a pesky Westminster College team and the ThunderWolves fought through a slow start to come away with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-16) win Friday.
In the match,
Sadie Scoville led with the team with 18 kills and
Payton Van Veen followed with 14 kills of her own.
Jazzy Espinoza ended the night with four blocks at the net and
Sabrina King led with 17 assists.
During the first set, CSU Pueblo went behind early and never was able to gain traction against the Westminster attack. In the set, the Pack totaled 13 kills in the set and two service aces.
Westminster went ahead 8-4 early on and the ThunderWolves were unable to find the momentum to get back in the set. The Pack got within two points but that was as close as they would get before falling 20-25.
In the second set, CSU Pueblo offense came alive and found its rhythm and jumped out to a 9-5 lead, thanks to three kills posted by Van Veen.
The ThunderWolves kept their foot on the gas and led by as many as six points with the score 12-6 after a kill by Scoville.
The Pack carried the momentum deeper into the set and the offensive attack helped to build a 16-8 lead.
Leading by eight points, the ThunderWolves closed out the set win with a 25-16 victory.
During the third set, both teams went into a back-and-forth type of match and Westminster went ahead 14-11 before the Pack responded and went on a 5-2 run, tying the set at 16 apiece.
CSU Pueblo continued to battle and closed out a 25-23 set win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set four, the Pack went out to an 8-2 lead after going on a 5-0 scoring rally. The ThunderWolves found themselves ahead 10-4 on another kill by Scoville.
The ThunderWolves dominated the entire set and came away with a 25-16 set win.
CSU Pueblo (16-3, 9-2 RMAC) next take to the court tomorrow at 4 p.m. for a big RMAC battle at No. 20 Colorado Mesa.
