Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

ThunderWolves Thwart Upset with 17-Point Comeback

DURANGO, Colo. (Jan. 21, 2022) – After a slow start, the Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (14-4, 10-2 RMAC) was able to mount an eventual 17-point comeback and take a 65-61 victory over Fort Lewis College (2-13, 1-8 RMAC) Friday evening.

Thanks to a JaNaiya Davis assist just seconds into the game, the ThunderWolves got off to a hot start after a deep 3-pointer from Ro Dominguez. Despite the fast start, the Pack felt the heat from Fort Lewis, as the Skyhawks forced nine turnovers in the first quarter.

Jazzy Hughes scored five-straight points to end a 10-0 run from the Skyhawks, but the Pack still found themselves in a 23-12 hole after one quarter of play.

The Skyhawks dropped another six points to kick-off and the quarter and head coach Tommie Johnson called a rebound with eight minutes to go and regrouped the squad. Over the next four minutes, the Pack went on a 10-2 run and dug into the Fort Lewis lead.

Alisha Davis then stepped up for the Pack. Davis dropped 11 straight points for the Pack and dwindled the lead down to six points with just seconds remaining in the half.

The Skyhawks drilled a 3-pointer with three seconds left on the clock and the Pack headed into the locker room with momentum on their side, trailing 38-29 at the halftime break.

Out of the break, the Pack went on a 7-0 run that was capped off by a JaNaiya Davis triple to put the game at a 38-36 score in Fort Lewis' favor.

A 6-0 spurt followed by a series of small bursts from the Skyhawks grew the lead back to 10 points in the home team's favor. The ThunderWolves headed into the fourth quarter behind 52-44 and were looking for more momentum in order to mount their comeback.

With 8:05 remaining in the game, Morgan Dial came in clutch for the Pack and drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to start off a massive quarter. JaNaiya Davis, Dominguez and Hughes piled on to make it a 13-1 run and give the ThunderWolves their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

After an Amaya Lewis free throw, the Pack lead grew to six points and the largest lead of the night with just 2:00 left on the clock.

CSU Pueblo was able to dig in its heels and stand tough for the remaining couple of minutes and put the Skyhawks away off a pair of JaNaiya Davis free throws with 15 seconds remaining. The free throws and a strong defensive stand clinched the Pack a 65-61 win over Fort Lewis to thwart the potential upset.

Alisha Davis led the Pack with 16 points off 6-8 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds on the night. The junior transfer has scored 15 or more points in eight of her 11 games played in the 2021-22 campaign. This is also the seventh game Davis has logged at least 15 points and eight rebounds in the same game.

For the third consecutive game, Hughes finished in double-figures in scoring off 11 total points. Hughes shot 4-5 from the field and pulled down six rebounds for the ThunderWolves.

Kansas Watts dropped 10 points to help round out the CSU Pueblo scoring efforts. JaNaiya Davis helped out the Pack with nine rebounds and five assists to lead the team in both categories. The senior's sole steal boosted her to third all-time in CSU Pueblo history.

CSU Pueblo moves to 13-4 on the season and 10-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference following the victory over Fort Lewis College. The ThunderWolves end their four-game week Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m., as the Pack travels over to Western Colorado (5-4, 7-7 RMAC).
