Valiant Comeback Effort Falls Short at Western

GUNNISON, Colo. (Jan. 22, 2022) – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (14-5, 10-3 RMAC) were unable to mount another comeback Saturday night and fell to Western Colorado (8-7, 6-4) 65-58. The ThunderWolves trailed by as many as 19 points and outscored the Mountaineers 53-42 in the final three quarters.

The first quarter saw a slow start for the Pack and a red-hot beginning for the Mountaineers. Western jumped to a 9-0 lead early and the Pack struggled to dig into the deficit. The Mountaineers finished the quarter with another 9-0 run and put the Pack trailing 23-5 after the period.

Tomia Johnson, Torie Bass and Alisha Davis dug in the lead with a modest 6-2 burst early in the second quarter. A 3-pointer from Ro Dominguez followed later by an Amaya Lewis layup cut the deficit down to 13 points.

A late 3-pointer from the Mountaineers extended the hosts' lead to 17 and sent the Pack into the locker room trailing 41-24.

Headed out of the break, the ThunderWolves tried to dig into the deficit once more. JaNaiya Davis kicked off a 6-0 run highlighted by two buckets from Kansas Watts down low. The six-point burst trimmed the lead down to a manageable 11 points with over five minutes to go in the quarter.

The Mountaineers halted the run with a 3-pointer, but Jazzy Hughes soon responded with a nabbed steal and fast break layup to take the ThunderWolves into the fourth quarter trailing 50-38.

The Pack immediately hit the ground running in the fourth quarter. Lewis drained a layup off-the-bat and Alisha Davis capped off an 8-0 run with another basket to get the Pack within four points with 8:03 to go in the contest.

The Mountaineers refused to yield and put the deficit back to nine points off a 5-0 run. Unfortunately for the Pack, the squad would be unable to respond and get trim the Western lead any more.

As time ticked away, the Mountaineers grew their lead back to 12 points. Hughes dropped five-straight points but it was not enough and the ThunderWolves ultimately fell 65-58.

The Pack scored 44 of their 58 points in the paint and were helped to 22 points off the bench.

Hughes led the CSU Pueblo scoring efforts with 12 to her credit. The senior logged a team-high six rebounds to go along with the scoring off the bench.

Alisha Davis tallied 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks while Watts added on another 10 points off a near-perfect 5-6 shooting from the field. JaNaiya Davis snagged two steals to move into third-place in CSU Pueblo program history at 220 for her career.

CSU Pueblo moves to 14-5 on the season following the loss and drops to 10-3 in the RMAC. The team looks to get back on track Friday night back home at Massari Arena as the Pack take on No. 14 Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 p.m. Following the high-powered battle, the ThunderWolves face Regis at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
