PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 18, 2022) – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (12-4, 8-2 RMAC) was unable to pull out a double overtime victory over Metropolitan State University Denver (9-4, 5-3 RMAC) Tuesday night, as the ThunderWolves fell 84-74.
Â
The Pack were outscored by the Roadrunners 15-5 in the second overtime after 50 total minutes of basketball.
Â
CSU Pueblo was ahead 16-8 after one quarter of play following an 11-0 run mounted by aÂ
Ro Dominguez 3-pointer and twoÂ
Kansas Watts layups.Â
Â
Despite the eventual 13-0 run by the Pack, the Roadrunners did not back down. The Pack and MSU Denver were in a duel of defenses in the second quarter. After aÂ
Jazzy Hughes layup, the ThunderWolves took their largest lead of the evening at 20-10.Â
Â
Headed into the halftime, CSU Pueblo held a modest eight-point lead over MSU Denver at 29-21.
Â
After the break, the Roadrunners made a burst and crawled within three points of the Pack.Â
Morgan Dial soon sank a 3-pointer and put the Pack back up by eight points thanks to a 7-2 burst. The run did not deter the Roadrunners and the visitors scored nine of the final 11 points of the quarter.
Â
The Pack entered the fourth quarter behind 44-42 with momentum shifted in MSU Denver's favor.
Â
The fourth quarter was when the game took off andÂ
Alisha Davis took control. Davis dominated down low and dropped the next nine points for the Pack capped off by a strong and-one bucket underneath.Â
Â
With 5:09 remaining in the fourth, the two foes found themselves in a 52-52 stalemate thanks to Davis' nine-point five-minute spurt.Â
Â
1:45 remained on the clock and the ThunderWolves trailed 57-56. CSU Pueblo made a defensive stop and called a timeout with 40 seconds to go in the period. Hughes came in clutch for the Pack and sank a deep 3-pointer off a Davis assist with 33 seconds to go.
Â
The Pack were able to force a stop with 18 seconds to go and sent Davis to the line. After she split the free throws and put the ThunderWolves ahead 60-57, MSU Denver charged down the court and nearly turned it over. Despite a near-steal byÂ
Amaya Lewis, the Roadrunners were able to find some daylight and sank a contested 3-pointer off the left-wing with less than two seconds remaining.
Â
Davis was unable to sink a buzzer-beating shot attempt and the game progressed to the first overtime tied at 60 points apiece. The junior transfer's 12 points in the fourth quarter are the most scored by any Pack player this season.
Â
After a scoreless minute and a half, the Roadrunners sank a 3-pointer to take a 3-point lead with just over three minutes remaining in the first overtime.Â
Â
Throughout the overtime period, both Hughes andÂ
Sydni Williams made game-tying layups and put pressure on the Roadrunners. Williams hit the go-ahead layup with just over a minute to play, but MSU Denver offense did not relent and tied it up once more.
Â
Neither team was able to take a lead inside the final 30 seconds and took each other into the second overtime tied at 69.
Â
Unfortunately for the Pack, Davis fouled out and others would soon follow in the second overtime. Two other ThunderWolves fouled out and CSU Pueblo was eventually outscored 15-5 in the second overtime.
Â
The Pack fell to MSU Denver 84-74 after the second overtime thriller in Massari Arena.
Â
Alisha Davis finished with her second-consecutive double-double off a 20-point, 12-rebound performance. The junior notched three blocks, two assists and two steals.
Â
Hughes shot a proficient 7-9 from the field and finished with 15 points, five assists and five rebounds off the bench.Â
JaNaiya Davis scored four points but contributed nine rebounds and three steals to her line.
Â
In the thrilling double-overtime loss, the Pack had eight lead changes and 14 ties.
Â
CSU Pueblo looks to bounce back quickly Wednesday afternoon as Colorado Christian marches into Massari Arena once again. The Pack tip-off with the Cougars at 3 p.m. on Harry H. Simmons Court.Â
