PUEBLO, Colo. (May 8, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team lost 13-8 to No. 1 Colorado Mesa University Saturday at Runyon Field in the annual Pack the Park game.
The ThunderWolves (13-21, 11-19 RMAC) hosted more than 300 area youth before the game at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Youth Clinic and then entertained close to 1,000 fans for the game
The Pack had an early 7-3 lead in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest and were tied 8-8 with theMavericks (33-2, 30-1 RMAC) midway through the game, but couldn't close the deal.
CSU Pueblo had 15 hits, while the Mavericks totaled 13. The Pack aided CMU with four errors, while the road team totaled 15 runners left on base.
Five players had multi-hit games, led by
Matt Shea's (Sr., INF, Corona, Calif.) 3-for-5 performance, which included two RBI and a run scored.
Player Performances
Aidan Welch (Jr., INF, Seattle, Wash.) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored in the lead-off spot.
Reggie Williams (So., 1B, Castle Rock, Colo.) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Ty Lewis (Jr., INF, Pleasant Grove, Utah) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior catcher
Stone Romero (Albuquerque, N.M.) was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.
In the ninth spot, freshman
Cole Knightley (INF, Solvang, Calif.) went 2-for-4.
Right-hander
Jake Lombardelli (R-So., Windsor, Colo.) hurled three innings and allowed five runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
Game Summary
After allowing three runs in the top of the first, the Pack responded with three of their own in the bottom half to tie the game 3-3 after one. Welch started the inning off with a triple and then scored when Williams singled. With two outs, Shea doubled to plate Williams, then Shea scored on a Romero single.
The ThunderWolves put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the second and scored four runs on three hits after being faced with their final strike. With the bases loaded
Adrian Martinez (Sr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) delivered a two-RBI single that scored Welch and Williams. A failed pickoff attempt down to third base by the Maverick catcher plated Lewis and moved Martinez to third. Shea delivered another RBI when he singled to plate Martinez.
Two CMU runs in the third and three more in the fifth handed the No. 1 team in the nation an 8-7 lead through five. In the bottom of the sixth the ThunderWolves tied the game when Welch came across thanks to a wild pitch.
The Mavericks scored four runs in the seventh, but just one was earned, as they opened a 12-8 lead. An insurance run in the ninth made it 13-8 and that is where it would finish.

The ThunderWolves close the series with the Mavericks Sunday at 12 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
