ThunderWolves fall in pair of games to No. 1 Mavericks

PUEBLO, Colo. (May 7, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team battled with No. 1 Colorado Mesa University Friday in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader at Rawlings Field. The ThunderWolves lost game one 7-3 and game two 12-6.

The Pack (13-20, 11-18) totaled 21 hits in the two games, while the Mavericks (32-2, 29-1 RMAC) had 20 hits.

In the two games, Reggie Williams (So., 1B, Castle Rock, Colo.) went 3-for-8 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Game 1 Summary

CSU Pueblo scored three runs in the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Aidan Welch (Jr., INF, Seattle, Wash.) started the game with a double to right center, then Williams followed with a double of his own, this time to left center to plate Welch for the first run of the series.

With Williams at third and Ty Lewis (Jr., INF, Pleasant Grove, Utah) on second after getting a hit, Adrian Martinez (Sr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) grounded out to short to plate Williams. Finally, Lewis scored when Matt Shea (Sr., INF, Corona, Calif.) singled up the middle to hand the home team an early 3-0 advantage.

Unfortunately, the Pack were unable to score the rest of the game, leaving a total of seven runners on base.

The Mavericks scored four in the third inning and then added a single run in the fifth before tacking on a couple insurance runs in the seventh to win 7-3.

Senior right-hander Brett Matthews (Queen Creek, Ariz.) went the distance on the mound for the ThunderWolves, as he suffered the loss. He allowed the seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with eight strikeouts.

Shea finished the game going 2-for-3 to join Welch with a multi-hit game. Welch went 2-for-4.

Game 2 Summary

Down 2-0 through two and a half, the Pack produced a run after Brandan Maher (R-Jr., 2B, Westminster, Colo.) and JP Hopkins (R-Sr., OF, Chino Hills, Calif.) started the inning with a pair of hits. Maher would eventually score when Williams grounded out to second for an RBI.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth and CMU led 3-2. The Pack got their run when Martinez led the inning off a double to left center and came home two batters later on a Stone Romero (Sr., C, Albuquerque, N.M.) single up the middle.

The Mavericks scored twice in the top of the fifth, but the ThunderWolves responded with a three-spot in the bottom half to knot the game 5-5. The home team got their runs off of three hits from the first three batters of the inning. Hopkins started the frame with a double down the left field line, then Welch guided Hopkins home when he singled up the middle. Up next was Williams, as he sent the ball over the center field fence to score two and tie the game 5-5.

CMU responded with three in the sixth and four in the seventh, as the ThunderWolves would score just one in the sixth to fall 12-6.

Williams went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Maher and Hopkins each produced two hits and scored a run.

CSU Pueblo out-hit the Mavericks 12-11 in the game.

Blake Slaymaker (R-Jr., RHP, Johnstown, Colo.) recorded a quality start, as he threw four innings and allowed three runs on three hits. He had four strikeouts.
