LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 9, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team allowed eight runs late in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Friday at New Mexico Highlands University and wouldn't be able to recover in an 8-3 loss.
The ThunderWolves (9-16, 7-14) had a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh, but allowed five runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to suffer the loss. The Cowboys (7-14, 5-12 RMAC) had just three hits before the seventh, but finished with nine to match the Pack's hit total on the day. Both teams had one error.
Starting pitcher
Blake Slaymaker (R-Jr., Johnstown, Colo.) hurled 5.2 innings and didn't allow a run. He gave up just three hits and fanned four batters.
Postgame Comment
"What a great job by Blake. We just didn't put them away and mistakes are worth double in innings 7-9," said CSU Pueblo Head Baseball Coach
Damian Stambersky. "The good part is we get an opportunity to be better tomorrow."
Player Performances
In the leadoff spot, senior
Kodee Martin (INF, Platte City, Mo.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Reggie Williams (So., 1B, Castle Rock, Colo.) continued to swing a hot bat, as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored and he drew a walk.
Aidan Welch (Jr., INF, Seattle, Wash.) finished the game going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Game Summary
In the top of the second, Williams got things started with a one-out infield single, then
Adrian Martinez (Sr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) singled up the middle and moved Williams to third.
After the second out was recorded on a sacrifice bunt that moved Martinez to second, Williams scored on a wild pitch.
JP Hopkins (R-Sr., OF, Chino Hills, Calif.) walked to set up a first and third situation for Martin, who delivered a single to short that plated Martinez.
Welch then put one into right field to score Hopkins from second and the ThunderWolves led 3-0.
It remained a 3-0 game until the Cowboys scored five runs on three hits in the seventh. The inning was aided by the one Pack error in the game.
NMHU put up some insurance runs in the eighth with three runs on three hits.
