Pitching sets the tone for the Pack in doubleheader sweep of NMHU

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 10, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team produced two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wins at New Mexico Highlands University Saturday, as the ThunderWolves won game one 11-4 and then picked up an extra inning victory in game two, 4-3.

In game one the ThunderWolves (11-16, 9-14) hit three home runs and scored five in the seventh to secure a win for Brett Matthews (Sr., Queen Creek, Ariz.), who pitched a complete game.

In game two, Ty Lewis (Jr., INF, Pleasant Grove, Utah) hit a home run to center in the top of the 10th inning to break a 3-3 tie and lift the Pack to a doubleheader sweep of the Cowboys (7-16, 5-14 RMAC). Senior Logan Gibbons (UTL, Taylorsville, Utah) pitched four strong innings and allowed just one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Senior Andrew Coverly (Centennial, Colo.) ended up throwing six innings of relief to get the win and allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Lewis finished the day going 4-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Game 1

Eight different batters recorded a hit, as the ThunderWolves totaled 12 in the game. CSU Pueblo totaled four extra base hits, which included three home runs.

Matthews effectively pitched all seven innings and scattered the eight hits. All four runs were earned. He fanned eight batters and issued only one free pass.

Gibbons went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. He produced one of the three homers in the game.

Shortstop Trey Vasquez (Jr., Greeley, Colo.) also went 2-for-4 with a home run, as he drove in two runs and scored once.

Lewis was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and rounding out the multi-hit club was Reggie Williams (So., 1B, Castle Rock, Colo.), who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Mike Gonzales (Jr, OF, Los Angeles, Calif.) hit the other long ball, as he scored twice and had two RBI.

Aidan Welch (Jr., INF, Seattle, Wash.) scored twice and added an RBI.

CSU Pueblo scored three in the first and one in the second to open a 4-0 lead. The first two runs were aided by a Cowboy error, then Vasquez hit a solo shot to right center in the first and Gibbons went to left center in the second.

In the fifth, Vasquez singled to center to plate Lewis to give the road team a 5-0 lead.

NMHIU scored twice in the fifth, but Gonzales' homer canceled out one run in the top of the sixth. The Cowboys got it back in the bottom half with a home run of their own.

Heading to the seventh the Pack held a 6-3 lead, but would get five insurance runs in the inning off of two hits and a Cowboy error.

A walk, then a hit by pitch, then an error by the catcher started the inning. A Gibbons two-run double finished the frame for the Pack.

Matthews would allow one run to score in the seventh, but he completed the game to help the Pack to an 11-4 victory.

Game 2

The Pack had 10 hits in game two, while the Cowboys had eight. The Pack had two errors in the game.

Lewis went 2-for-4 with two RBI and the game-winning run.

Adrian Martinez (Sr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) was the only other member of the ThunderWolves with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4.

CSU Pueblo scored first when a Lewis sacrifice fly scored JP Hopkins (R-Sr., OF, Chino Hills, Calif.) in the third inning.

NMHU got one in the fifth on a homer down the right field line.

The ThunderWolves then put together a two-run sixth to open a 3-1 lead. Williams scored Welch on a sacrifice fly, then Stone Romero (Sr., C, Albuquerque, N.M.) plated Vasquez with a single through the right side.

The Cowboys responded in the bottom half of the inning and scored two runs of their own to knot the contest at 3-3.

Both teams had opportunities in extra innings with none better than the Cowboys in the bottom of the eighth when they loaded the bases with only one out. A hit, an error and a walk put Coverly in tough spot, but he was able to get the home team out with a pop out to third and a fly out to shallow center.

After the scare, Coverly had three strikeouts in the ninth.

The New Mexico Highlands starter went nine innings, as the ThunderWolves faced a reliever in the 10th. After recording an out, the new pitcher offered up something Lewis couldn't refuse, as he cleared the center field fence to score what would be the winning run.

NMHU put two on in the bottom half, but a double play by the ThunderWolves closed the game to hand the Pack a 4-3 victory and a sweep of the day.
