Grizzlies defeat ThunderWolves in a pair of RMAC contests

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 2, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team suffered a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference losses to Adams State University Friday by the scores of 11-7 and 4-3.

Game one was all about the long ball, as the Grizzlies (6-13, 4-10 RMAC) scored nine runs off six home runs, while the ThunderWolves (8-15, 6-13 RMAC) totaled three runs off three balls driven over the outfield fence.

The bats calmed a bit in game two, as the battle came down to the final innings where ASU was able to capitalize on its opportunities to secure the one-run win.

Postgame Comment

"I have to be better at teaching our group when the game comes our way, we have to execute better," said Head Baseball Coach Damian Stambersky. "We have to have a heightened competitiveness both on the mound and in the box in those situations. We are building too many innings for the opposition still and we just haven't taken advantage of game moments. We will keep working at it."

Player Performances

In game one, batting in the ninth spot, Adrian Campos (Jr., 1B, Mission Hills, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Junior Aidan Welch (INF, Seattle, Wash.) was the only other player with two hits, as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Adrian Martinez's (Sr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) only hit was a base clearing double that scored three runs.

In game two, Martinez went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Kodee Martin (Sr., INF, Platte City, Mo.) was the other player with two hits, as he was 2-for-4.

Game Summaries

In game one, the ThunderWolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, as the home team loaded the bases and Martinez delivered a two out double to left to score three and total three RBI.

A solo shot by the Grizzlies in the top of the second made it 3-1, but CSU Pueblo responded in the bottom half with a solo home run by Daniel Abiles (Sr., C, Chandler, Ariz.). The Pack added another run in the second when Ty Lewis (Jr., INF, Pleasant Grove, Utah) singled to right center to plate Welch.

Adams State came back and scored seven total runs in the third and fourth to lead 8-5 through five and a half innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Campos homered to right center, then Trey Vasquez (Jr., Greeley, Colo.) came up and produced a pinch hit home run to left and the ThunderWolves trailed by only one at 8-7

The Grizzlies added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh with two home runs that put three on the board and the road team led, 11-7. Unfortunately, the Pack couldn't match ASU's power and would go down in defeat.

Game one saw 12 hits by Adams State and 10 hits by the ThunderWolves with neither team committing an error.

Game two only saw 13 total hits (8 for the Pack) and two errors by each squad.

Again the Pack were the first to strike with three runs in the bottom of the second. Stone Romero (C, Albuquerque, N.M.) plated Martinez from second with a single to right field to get things going. Errors aided the Pack on and around the bases, then Martin took advantage and drove in junior Mike Gonzales (OF, Los Angeles, Calif.) and Romero on a double to center to hand the home team an early 3-0 lead.

CSU Pueblo wouldn't be able to score the rest of the game, as it left five on base.

ASU plated an unearned run in the fourth, then tied the game in the fifth off a triple. In the sixth, the Grizzlies had two on base with two outs and were able to deliver a hit that would score the winning run.

R-Jr. Blake Slaymaker (Johnstown, Colo.) started for the Pack and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

Next Up

The ThunderWolves and Grizzlies conclude their series Saturday with a game at 12 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
