Pack and Cougars split doubleheader

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 24, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team split a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader versus Colorado Christian University Saturday, as the ThunderWolves lost game one 5-4 in eight innings and won game two 11-6. 
 
The Pack (13-18, 11-16) combined for 21 hits, while the Cougars (12-18, 11-16 RMAC) had 16. Both teams committed three errors on the day. 
 
In the leadoff spot, senior Kodee Martin (INF, Platte City, Mo.) combined to go 5-for-7 with three RBI, three runs scored and two walks.
 
Game 1 Summary
 
CSU Pueblo totaled four hits in the game, while Colorado Christian had six. CCU totaled three errors while the ThunderWolves had two.
 
CCU scored first, as the Cougars put up two in the fourth inning. 
 
The Pack got on the board in the fifth when they put together four runs. Aidan Welch (Jr., INF, Seattle, Wash.) drew a bases loaded walk to score senior Daniel Abiles (C, Chandler, Ariz.) for the first run, then Ty Lewis(Jr., INF, Pleasant Grove, Utah) placed the ball in center for a bases-clearing double. Brandan Maher (R-Jr., 2B, Westminster, Colo.), Martin and Welch all scored. 
 
The Cougars tied the game in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs, while one run came off a Pack error. 
 
The game went to extras for the second straight time with the Cougars. CCU then produced a run in the top of the 8th and the ThunderWolves couldn't respond in the 5-4 loss. 
 
Senior righty Brett Matthews (Queen Creek, Ariz.) pitched seven innings and allowed three earned runs off of five hits. He totaled 12 strikeouts, which tied a career high. 
 
Game 2 Summary 
 
The ThunderWolves totaled 11 runs on 17 hits and had two innings where they produced four runs. 
 
Leading off, Martin went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. 
 
The six through nine hitters combined to go 8-for-14 with five RBI and seven runs scored. 
 
Batting sixth, Matt Shea (Sr., INF, Corona, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. 
 
In the seventh spot, Cody Beck (Jr., INF, Brighton, Colo.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. 
 
Batting eighth was JP Hopkins (R-Sr., OF, Chino Hills, Calif.), as he produced two hits and scored twice.
 
Finally, in the ninth position, Brock Rodrigues (So., UTL, Pueblo, Colo.) was 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. 
 
Junior Tim McIntyre (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) started the game on the mound and allowed two earned runs on five hits in four innings of work. He fanned four batters. Jeron Petterson (R-Jr., RHP, Brush, Colo.) would pick up the win. Three of the four runs allowed were earned, as he gave up four hits in two innings. 
 
The Pack scored one run in the second and one in the third to open a 2-0 lead, but two runs by the Cougars tied the game 2-2 in the fourth. 
 
CSU Pueblo scored four runs in the fourth, as Rodrigues hit his first collegiate home run to produce three RBI. The Pack totaled six hits in the inning, as the other run came when Adrian Martinez (Sr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) singled through the left side to plate Martin. 
 
CCU immediately responded with a four spot of their own and the game was tied again at 6-6. 
 
In the fifth, the Pack put together a two out rally and loaded the bases. Welch drew a walk for an RBI for the second time on the day and Hopkins scored. 
 
The ThunderWolves produced four insurance runs in the sixth to push the lead to 11-6. The frame was highlighted by a Martin double to right that scored three.

The ThunderWolves conclude the series Sunday with a nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m.
