Bats get hot in 19-13 win at New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 11, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team totaled 19 runs on 19 hits to record a 19-13 victory Sunday at New Mexico Highlands University. The ThunderWolves won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series 3-1.
 
The Pack (12-16, 10-14) scored three or more runs in four innings, which included a seven-run fourth that broke a 6-6 tie. The Cowboys (7-17, 5-15 RMAC) totaled 11 hits. 
 
Both teams struggled in the field, as NMHU had five errors, which resulted in six unearned runs for CSU Pueblo. The ThunderWolves were charged with four errors, which aided five Cowboy runs. 
 
The Pack had nine batters register a hit, eight score a run and seven record an RBI. Five players had two or more hits. 
 
Sophomore Reggie Williams (1B, Castle Rock, Colo.) went 5-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored. He had two doubles. 
 
Junior Trey Vasquez (SS, Greeley, Colo.) hit two home runs and drove in five runs, as he went 3-for-6. He also scored three runs. 
 
The two batted in the 4-5 spot, respectfully, and combined to go 8-for-12 with nine RBI and six runs scored. 
 
In the leadoff spot, senior Kodee Martin (INF, Platte City, Mo.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and two walks. He mixed in a triple on the day. 
 
Jake Lombardelli (R-So., Windsor, Colo.) got the win for the ThunderWolves. He threw four innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. 
 
Post Game Comment
 
"Our response to our own self-induced adversity was the best part of the weekend," said Head Coach Damian Stambersky. "I don't know that we're making less mistakes, but we are certainly competing our way through the mistakes."
 
Player Performances
 
In the ninth spot, Adrian Martinez (Sr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. 
 
Ty Lewis (Jr., INF, Pleasant Grove, Utah) had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. 
 
Aidan Welch (Jr., INF, Seattle, Wash.) added two RBI and scored a run. He walked twice. 
 
Catcher Daniel Abiles (Sr., Chandler, Ariz.) scored three runs and JP Hopkins (R-Sr., OF, Chino Hills, Calif.) scored twice.
 
Game Summary
 
The ThunderWolves scored three in the first, which was highlighted by RBI doubles by Williams and Logan Gibbons (Sr., UTL, Taylorsville, Utah).
 
NMHU responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first to tie the game 3-3. 
 
Lewis had a two RBI single to center in the second, as the road team scored three to go up 6-3.
 
Three runs in the second and third by the Cowboys tied the game again, this time at 6-6.
 
The ThunderWolves then pieced together a seven-run fourth that saw seven hits and two NMHU errors. The Pack brought 11 batters to the plate in the frame. Williams doubled down the right field line to plate the first two runs of the inning, then Vasquez launched one to center for another pair of runs. The last three runs came with two outs and were all unearned, as Martinez hit a homer to left field. 
 
Heading to the top of the seventh it was 13-9, but Martin's RBI triple and a Welch single had the ThunderWolves ahead 15-9. 
 
The home team didn't quit and produced three runs in the seventh and eighth to trail 15-12 leading into the ninth frame. 
 
CSU Pueblo was able to drive in four more runs to ensure the victory. Vasquez hit a two-run home run to left center and then Martin and Welch drew bases loaded walks to score two more and the Pack were ahead 19-12. 
 
A solo shot in the bottom of the ninth was all the Cowboys could muster, as the ThunderWolves exited Las Vegas with the 19-13 victory and a series win.
 
Next Up

The ThunderWolves have a weekend off before hosting Colorado Christian April 23-25.
