Softball splits Sunday DH, take 3-of-4 in series versus Chadron

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 7, 2021) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball split the final two games of a four game set against Chadron State Sunday. The Pack won the first game, 9-1 and dropped the finale, 14-6 at Rawlings Sports Complex.

On the day, Gabby Moreno (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) led with five hits and four runs. In the series, Moreno went 7-for-15 (.467 average), scoring five runs and a double.

Isabel Griego (Jr., Loveland, Colo.) finished the weekend, collecting six hits and earning two free passes.

In game one, freshman Oakleigh Kearby (Meridian, Idaho) earned her third victory of the season, improving to 3-0 after tossing a complete game and allowing one run on just three hits. She finished with a season-high eight strikeouts.

The offense came alive in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on five hits. Sabrina Felix (Sr., Corona, Calif.) smacked her second homerun of the series, hitting a three-run homerun over the right field wall.

Kearby went three innings before allowing a hit. She would scatter three total in the game.

In the home half of the sixth and the Pack holding a 6-1 lead, the ThunderWolves scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI-single from Marissa Piatt (Sr., San Luis Obispo, Calif.).

The series finale the Eagles jumped out to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Pack responded with two runs in their half on a inside-the-park homerun down the left field line by Griego.

The score remained 3-2 in favor of Chadron before they scored a run in the top of the fourth and the ThunderWolves came back in their next at bat and tied the game at 4-4 on a two-run shot by Katelynn Ralston (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.).

The Eagles scored ten runs over the final two innings and built a 14-4 lead.

CSU Pueblo added two runs in the sixth on a Samantha Riesen (Sr., Independence, Calif.) two-run blast to bring the score at 14-6 and it helped her cause in the pitcher's circle. The ThunderWolves had one runner reach base in the seventh before the side was retired.

Riesen was tagged with the loss and falls to 1-1 on the year.
