PUEBLO, Colo. (March 6, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team swept a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games against Chadron State, Saturday at Rawlings Sports Complex. The Pack won game one 5-4 on a walk-off homerun, followed by a 2-0 win in game two.
In front of a crowd for the first time this season, the ThunderWolves used that energy in the twin bill.
Sabrina Felix (Sr., Corona, Calif.) crushed her first homerun of the season in walk-off fashion in game one.
In game one, CSU Pueblo scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a
Jessica Teller (Jr., Firestone, Colo.) single to center field.
Chadron took its first lead at 3-1 in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on one hit in the frame.
The ThunderWolves tied the game in the sixth thanks to an RBI-double by
Emma Flynn (Jr., Longmont, Colo.) and an RBI-bunt single by
Tori Britton (Fr., Litchfield Park, Ariz.)
Starting in the circle for the Pack,
Taylor Strupp (Jr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) was tagged for three runs on one hit in 3.2 innings pitched.
Sophia Lishner (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.) came on in relief and allowed one unearned run and gave up four hits to Chadron.
Lishner improves her record to 2-2 on the year.
In the final inning, CSU Pueblo got the winning run in scoring position but was unable to capitalize.
Playing in the second extra innings game of the season, Chadron scored one run in the top half and was quickly responded by the ThunderWolves in the home half with a single run.
Marissa Piatt (Sr., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) recorded her first of the game, scoring Teller from second base.
Knotted at 4-4 in the ninth, Lishner retired the Eagles in order, setting up a dramatic finish in the home half.
Felix stepped to the plate and crushed a no-doubter over the right field wall, propelling the Pack over the Eagles, 5-4 in the first game.
In the nightcap, a first inning two-run homerun hit by Piatt was all that starting pitcher
Samantha Riesen (Grad., Independence, Calif.) needed as she tossed a gem, throwing a complete game and allowing no runs and she gave up just three hits and five strikeouts.
With her pitch count under the century mark, Riesen was effective and had little trouble with the Chadron lineup. Riesen improves to 2-2 on the year.
For the day, three players posted three hits.
Coach Comments
"Today was a great day for the Pack. Sophia came in for relief in the first game and did a great job. Sabrina had a good day at the plate and what a way to win game one," said Pack Head Coach
Christie Koschke. "With the second game, I was very proud of the way Samantha came out. She had total control of her pitches and was able to throw what she wanted, when she wanted. A great shutout for her and we will build off that going into tomorrow."
CSU Pueblo (6-4, 3-3 RMAC) will finish the series Sunday with a first pitch set for 11 a.m. at Rawlings Sports Complex.
