Walks Bite Pack in loss to Rangers

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 5, 2021) – Colorado State University Pueblo Baseball opened its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule with a 10-5 loss to Regis University Friday at Rawlings Field.

Game Recap:
The ThunderWolves (2-3, 0-1 RMAC) walked 10 batters on the day. This trend of free passes started in the first inning when the Rangers (5-0, 1-0 RMAC) scored a run before their first hit was even on the board. Jake Lombardelli (R-Jr., Windsor, Colo.) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the opening frame.  The Pack stranded 13 Rangers on the bases over the contest.

In the bottom of the first, the Pack tied it. Ty Lewis (Jr., Pleasant Grove, Utah) legged out a single.  With two outs Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) swatted a triple to drive in Lewis and tie the game at one.

The Rangers added two runs in the third and two in the fifth to vault in front 5-1. The Pack answered in the bottom of the fifth. Lewis doubled home Aidan Welch (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) CSU-Pueblo pushed across two more runs in the sixth to close within one. Reggie Williams (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) singled and scored on a Kodee Martin (Sr., Elkhorn, Neb.) triple. Martin scored on a Rangers error to make it 5-4.

Regis added one more in the seventh, three in the eighth, and one in the ninth. The Pack's last burst of offense came in the eighth when Williams scored on a Martin groundout. However, they could not close the gap any further as the Rangers held on to a 10-5 win.

Notables:
Lewis went 3-for-5 on the day, raising his average to .500. He also doubled and was robbed of extra bases on a diving catch in the sixth.

Martin reached base three times due to his triple and two walks. The triple was Martin's first in a Pack uniform.

Marco Martin (Fr., Excelsior Springs, Mo.) picked up his first hit at CSU Pueblo. Martin doubled in the eighth to get his first knock in red and blue.

Pitchers of Record:
Justin Kleinsorge got the win for Regis, lasting 5.2 innings to move to 2-0 on the season. He walked five and struck out five. Lombardelli took the loss for the Pack. He struck out three in 2.2 innings of work, but fell to 0-2 on the season.

Coach Stambersky Quote:
"We're obviously still building, said CSU Pueblo Head Baseball Coach Damian Stambersky. "If there's one good thing to take away from that, it's that our guys kept going. They didn't roll over. They felt like they were in the game. They felt like they were within striking distance."

"We just have to better to ourselves, play better catch, and make the opposition actually earn the win as opposed to handing them 20 plus free 90s in a game."

Up Next:
The Pack and Rangers will clash in a doubleheader Saturday at Rawlings Field. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. A limited number of fans will be allowed at Rawlings Field for Saturday's doubleheader.
