Gibbons lifts Pack past No. 18 Roadrunners, 4-3

DENVER (March 28, 2021) – Senior Logan Gibbons (Taylorsville, Utah) hit two home runs and drove in three of the four runs for the Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team Sunday, as the ThunderWolves posted a 4-3 upset victory against No. 18 Metro State University of Denver in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest in Denver.

The Pack (8-12, 6-10 RMAC) handed the Roadrunners (18-2, 14-2 RMAC) just their second loss of the season and ended their eight-game win streak. After failing to get a hit against MSU Denver Saturday, the ThunderWolves totaled 11 hits Sunday and allowed just eight.

Gibbons was the hero at the plate, but also played a big role on the mound, as well. At the dish he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored on two home runs. On the rubber, Gibbons started and pitched five innings where he allowed two earned runs on five hits with a handful of strikeouts and just one walk.

Postgame Comments

"I can't say enough about the relentlessness of this group," said Head Baseball Coach Damian Stambersky. "There's been some very strange events throughout the first half of this season, but we are getting better at managing our responses. Their growth as a unit has been impressive to us coaches. We will continue to get better at baseball during the midweeks, but I am truly proud of our attitude as a whole."

"I needed to make an adjustment at the plate like Coach Stambersky and I talked about before the game," Gibbons said. "So I just tried to stay calm and collected, both in the box and on the mound."

Player Performances

Reggie Williams (So., 1B, Castle Rock, Colo.) also produced a multi-hit game, as he wrapped a strong weekend at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Batting in the ninth position, sophomore Brock Rodrigues (UTL, Pueblo, Colo.) was a spark, as he went 2-for-4 and a scored a run.

Andrew Coverly (Sr., Centennial, Colo.) earned the win after hurling two innings and allowing just two hits and fanning two batters. Johnathan Ramirez (R-Jr., RHP, Henderson, Colo.) picked up a two-inning save.

Game Summary

Down 1-0 after five, Gibbons helped his own cause and drove the ball over the left field fence to knot the game 1-1.

The Roadrunners responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run to regain the lead at 2-1.

CSU Pueblo opened a 4-2 lead after seven, as the ThunderWolves scored three runs on three hits. Rodrigues started the inning off with a double through the left side, then Kodee Martin (Sr., INF, Platte City, Mo.) guided him home on a single up the middle. With two outs and Aidan Welch (INF, Seattle, Wash.) on base thanks to a walk, Gibbons hit his second bomb of the day, this time to left center, to give the road team a 4-2 lead.

MSU Denver got one back in the bottom of the eighth with a solo shot.

The Roadrunners had two men on in the bottom of the ninth with only one out, but a Ramirez punch out got the second out and the final out came on a foul out to first.
