Pack drop two at Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. (March 1, 2021) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball dropped a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games Monday at Colorado School of Mines. The Pack fell 12-5 in game one and lost an 8-inning affair, 5-4 in the series finale.

For the day, Isabel Griego (Loveland, Colo.) led the offense with five hits and three RBIs. Marissa Piatt (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) went 4-for-6 (.667) at the plate, tallying a double and two RBIs.

In the four-game set, Katelynn Ralston (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) guided the offense, going 8-for-15 (.533 average) with three doubles, three runs and 11 total bases.

As a team, the ThunderWolves totaled 15 doubles on 44 hits. Jessica Teller (Firestone, Colo.) finished the weekend with five doubles hit.

During game one of the doubleheader Monday, the ThunderWolves' offense picked up where they left yesterday, scoring the first run in the first inning on a RBI-bunt single from Griego, scoring Gabby Moreno (Scottsdale, Ariz.) who singled and reached third base on a defensive error to start the game.

Mines would score three runs in their half of the first before the Pack was back on offense in the second. In the frame, Emma Flynn (Longmont, Colo.) led the inning off with a solo homerun to center field.

RBI-hits by Griego and Piatt completed the three-run second inning and gave the Pack a 4-3 lead.

CSU Pueblo added another run in the next at bat thanks to a single through the left side by Griego.

Mines scored nine unanswered runs starting in the third and scored a game-high four runs in the home half of the fifth. The Pack offense stayed silent the rest of the game for a 12-5 loss.

Sophia Lishner (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.) was tabbed with the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season.

In the series finale, the ThunderWolves scored the first run of the game in the second on a single to right field by Tori Britton (Fr., Litchfield Park, Ariz.) to record her first RBI of her career.

The see-saw battle continued through the middle innings as the Pack scored one run in the third and the two runs in the fourth inning tied the game at four apiece after four complete innings.

Over the last four innings, the ThunderWolves left seven runners on base including a bases loaded situation in the seventh.

In the first extra inning game of the year, CSU Pueblo got the go-ahead run to third base with two outs before a fly out ended the threat. In the bottom of the inning, Mines hit two doubles including the game winner, securing the 5-4 victory.

Pack hurler Taylor Strupp (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) was tabbed with the loss after she came on in relief during the third inning and lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up one run on six hits. Strupp falls to 1-2 on the season in the circle.

CSU Pueblo (4-4, 1-3 RMAC) will return home and host Chadron State College (Mar. 6-7) in a four-game RMAC series at Rawlings Softball Complex.
