See-saw struggle tilts to Hornets as Pack splits series

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 22, 2021) – Colorado State University Pueblo Baseball battled Emporia State University in tightly contested game Monday, but in the end, the ThunderWolves fell to the Hornets 8-6 at Rawlings Field.

Game Recap:
The Hornets opened the game with a leadoff triple. Pack starter, Andrew Coverly (Sr., Centennial, Colo.) stranded the runner and kept the Hornets scoreless until the third when they scored two runs.

CSU Pueblo (2-2) got on the board in the fourth when Reggie Williams (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) drove in Aidan Welch (Jr., Seattle, Wash.). The Pack tied the game in the fifth when Logan Gibbons (Sr., Taylorsville, Utah) drove in Trey Vasquez (Jr., Greeley, Colo.) with a knock.

In the sixth inning, Williams smashed a two-run home run to put the Pack on top 4-2. The Hornets reclaimed the lead in the seventh with a three-run double.
The ThunderWolves jumped back in front in the bottom of the seventh. Adrian Martinez (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) swatted a single that drove in Welch and Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) to put the Pack in front 6-5.

Emporia State belted a two-run home run in the top of the eighth. They added one run in the ninth and held off the ThunderWolves to force a 2-2 series split.
 
Notables:
Martinez reached base in all four of his trips to the dish. He went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Martinez walked once and was hit by a pitch.

Welch finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. He also stole a base and walked.

Williams matched a career-high with three RBIs. His home run was the third of his career.

Gibbons went 2-for-5 with a RBI. He finished the series 8-for-16 with four RBIs.

Ty Lewis (Jr., Pleasant Grove, Utah) reached base three times thanks to a hit and two walks.

Vasquez went 1-for-4 in his first start. He also earned his first stolen base in a Pack uniform.
 
Pitchers of Record:
Alex Debey picked up the win for Emporia State after 2.1 innings of relief. Tim McIntyre (Jr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took the loss for the Pack.

"It's going to continue to be a back and forth deal as we work through the early parts of the season, said CSU Pueblo Head Baseball Coach Damian Stambersky. "The approach, the culture, the way the guys are treating each other in the dugout is all getting to be the way that we want it. When the execution matches the approach, we will be pretty good."

Up Next:
The Pack will enjoy a week off before beginning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The ThunderWolves will open their RMAC schedule, when they host Regis University in a four-game series starting Friday March 5 at 6 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
