Pack Nearly Upsets No. 21 Western Colorado

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 19, 2021) – Colorado State University Pueblo Women's Basketball gave No. 21 Western Colorado University a fight Saturday. The Pack nearly upset the Mountaineers, but Western Colorado rallied to a 62-57 win.
 
Game Recap:
The ThunderWolves came out on fire. CSU Pueblo bolted out to a 16-4 lead. They maintained that 12-point advantage, leading 23-11 after one. JaNaiya Davis (Jr., Waco, Texas) scored 13 points in the first quarter on 6-of-6 shooting. The Pack 61.1 percent from the field in the first quarter.
 
The Mountaineers rallied in the second, tying it a 30 going into the half. The Pack started the second half on an 8-2 run. They led 47-44 heading into the final frame. The Pack maintained its lead in the fourth, leading 57-53 with four minutes remaining. Western Colorado went on a 9-0 run and was able to hold the Pack scoreless the rest of the way as they rallied to a 62-57 win.

Individual Highlights:
-  Davis scored 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Her 23 points are the most by a ThunderWolf this season. She also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out seven assists. Defensively, Davis added two steals and two block.
 
- Kansas Watts (Jr., Houston, Texas) matched her season-high with 12 points. Watts drained 4-of-6 from the field. She also made 4-of-5 at the charity stripe. Watts finished with a block and a steal. Both of her 12-point games came this week.
 
- Sydni Williams (Sr., Little Rock, Ark.) scored 10 points Williams narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. She swatted two blocks and came away with a steal.

Coach Johnson quote:
"Our team showed a ton of heart and improvement," said CSU Pueblo Women's Basketball Head Coach Tommie Johnson. "After a great start led by JaNaiya Davis, we just couldn't seal the deal. Thirty eight minutes of competitive basketball. Just not enough tonight. Go Pack!

Notes:
- The Mountaineers attempted 25 free throws compared to just 10 for the Pack. They had nine attempts compared to zero for the Pack in the fourth quarter.
