PUEBLO, Colo. (Dec. 7, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (7-1, 3-0) took its seventh-straight win Tuesday night, as the ThunderWolves claimed a 72-59 victory over Adams State (3-5, 1-2) thanks to a dominant fourth quarter.
Â
Much like the theme for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) this season, the match-up started with neither team yielding an inch.Â
Jazzy Hughes set the tone for the night right before the first media break and knocked down a 3-pointer fromÂ
Tomia Johnson's assist.Â
Â
The Grizzlies took a 5-0 spurt into the quarter break and put the Pack in a 21-18 deficit after one period of play.
Â
The ThunderWolves came out with a bang in the second quarter afterÂ
Amaya Lewis snatched a steal and dished it toÂ
JaNaiya Davis for a fast-break layup. Although the steal energized the Pack, the Grizzlies came back with a vengeance and went on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead had in the first half at 28-20.
Â
The Pack jumped back into contention with a 10-0 run of their own kickstarted by aÂ
Kansas Watts layup. The two teams played even the remainder of the half and headed into the break knotted up at 34 apiece. Davis enjoyed a first half of 14 points off 6-7 shooting from the field.
Â
Coming out of the locker room, neither team could gain an inch, matching each other shot-for-shot. Lewis buried a bucket at the 3:14 mark to claim the Pack's largest lead of the quarter at six points, but the Grizzlies surged back and caused the ThunderWolves to exit the quarter ahead 53-52.
Â
With 6:22 remaining in the game, the Pack were looking for an opportunity to run away with the game and found it off aÂ
Jalen Long 3-pointer. The 3-pointer by Long was part of an 11-0 run that spanned over four minutes.
Â
With 1:56 left, the tide had turned in Massari Arena in favor of the ThunderWolves thanks to a dagger 3-pointer from Hughes. The long-range bucket gave the Pack a 10-point lead with under two minutes to go in the contest. One more three from Johnson iced the game for the Pack and allowed the ThunderWolves to glide the final minute to a 72-59 victory.
Â
As a team, CSU Pueblo shot an efficient 51% from the field and 43.8% from beyond the 3-point arch. The Pack were helped to 35 points off the bench and 18 off fast-breaks thanks to their 12 steals.
Â
Hughes played an intricate role off the bench in the Tuesday night victory over the Grizzlies, as she scored a game-high 19 points off 7-11 shooting and tacked on four steals to wreak havoc on the Adams State team. Â
Â
Davis finished with her 14 points she dropped in the first half, but led the Pack with four assists and eight rebounds while she added on two more steals.Â
Â
Lewis scored eight points while she added five rebounds and three steals to the ThunderWolves' efforts. Watts pulled down seven rebounds and tacked on a block and two steals to help the well-rounded Pack showing.Â
Â
No. 22 CSU Pueblo women's basketball will be back in action for another test Sunday afternoon as the ThunderWolves head up north for a Division I battle at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. Tip-off with the Rams will take place at noon.Â
