FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Dec. 12, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (7-2) fell to Colorado State University (9-1) 64-45 Sunday afternoon on the road.
The ThunderWolves started off the first quarter hot from the floor.
JaNaiya Davis and
Ro Dominguez hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take a quick 10-2 lead. The Rams were forced to take a timeout and regroup.
Colorado State surged back with a modest 6-2 run over the next three minutes to close the gap but as the Rams started to setup their final shot of the quarter, Davis picked the pocket of the point guard and hit a buzzer-beating layup to give the ThunderWolves a 14-8 lead after one quarter of play.
The second quarter saw different play from the Rams. After a 5-0 spurt to kick-off the quarter, Colorado State woke up on the offensive side of the ball.
In the final 3:41 of the second quarter, the Rams exploded with an 18-3 run that featured three 3-pointers in the final 52 seconds of play. Headed into the half following the Rams offensive awakening, the Pack trailed 32-24.
Headed out of the break, the Pack needed another burst of energy. The Rams extended the lead to 10 points early on but then the ThunderWolves began to try and chip into the deficit. Thanks to an
Amaya Lewis block and another Davis 3-pointer, the Pack were able to claw back within three points with a couple minutes to go in the period.
The Rams were able to put together a late run in the quarter and put the Pack trailing 50-40 after the third period of play.
In the final quarter of play, the Pack were looking for a big run to pull back into contention. Unfortunately for CSU Pueblo, the Rams shooting would not relent and kept the Pack from getting back within reach of an upset win.
The Pack ultimately fell to Colorado State 64-45 after the hard fought match-up in Fort Collins.
Lewis finished the afternoon as the Pack's top scorer with 14 points and six rebounds. Davis accompanied her teammate with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
The seven-game win-streak headed into Sunday was the longest for the program since the 2017-18 season when they won 14 in a row. CSU Pueblo falls to 7-2 on the season after the loss but looks to bounce back against RMAC foe Westminster at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Sal Lake City.
