Davis Joins 1,000-Point Club in 68-55 Pack Win Over Cowgirls

PUEBLO, Colo. (Dec. 4, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team staved off a New Mexico Highlands (3-5, 0-2) comeback and clinched its second-straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) win Saturday night. The ThunderWolves move to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in RMAC play following the 68-55 win over the Cowgirls.

JaNaiya Davis joined the 1,000-point club with her performance for the ThunderWolves Saturday night.

The ThunderWolves had three starters out due to various injuries and needed other players to step into their roles on the court.

The Cowgirls started off with a 14-5 lead eight minutes into the opening quarter. Kansas Watts and Daeja Johnson dropped five points in the final minutes of the period and closed the gap to five points after one quarter of play.

Ro Dominguez hammered home a 3-pointer to kick-off the second quarter and then another in two minutes to pull within two points. The second Dominguez started an 11-2 run over the Cowgirls and slingshot the Pack to their first lead of the night.

Aubriana Noti started another 9-2 run for the ThunderWolves to help the team close out the second quarter and give the Pack a new 10-point advantage headed into the break leading 33-23.

With new energy, the Cowgirl dwindled the Pack lead down to four points with just under seven minutes to go in the third. JaNaiya Davis and Jazzy Hughes combined for an 8-2 run to put the Pack back ahead by 10 with 3:21 remaining in the quarter.

A 7-0 run from the Cowgirls put the Pack back ahead only by four points headed in to final quarter ahead, 43-39.

The fourth quarter saw a battle of wills with the Cowgirls eventually taking a one-point lead with just under five minutes to go in the game. After a go-ahead 3-pointer from New Mexico Highlands, Davis nailed a 3-pointer to give the Pack the lead once again with only three minutes remaining.

Chaos ensued the next two minutes. Davis and Hughes hit back-to-back baskets and was then followed up by a Davis steal and an Amaya Lewis layup. After serving up an assist, Jalen Long nabbed an out-of-bounds pass and went back up for a layup to cap-off a 10-0 run.

The Pack held onto the lead for the remaining minute of the contest and claimed the intensely fought 68-55 battle.

Davis finished as the tough performer for the Pack with 23 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. The senior shot a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line and 6-12 from the floor. Davis' 23 points claimed her a spot in the 1,000-point club for CSU Pueblo scorers, now sitting at 1,001 career points as a ThunderWolves player.

Hughes shot for 10 points and nabbed six rebounds to help the Pack efforts.

CSU Pueblo claimed 20 points off the fast break opportunities and added on 28 points off the Cowgirls' turnovers.

The Pack now move to 6-1 on the young season and 2-0 in RMAC play after the physical battles on Friday and Saturday. The team now looks forward to another home battle against Adams State University at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
