ThunderWolves set the tone with strong performances at the Mines Alumni Classic

GOLDEN, Colo. (Dec. 4, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's indoor track & field season is underway, and both set the tone for the season with strong performances at the 2021 Mines Alumni Classic.

Day 1 on the men's side consisted of Nate Miller (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Justin Jenks (Jr., Helena, Mont.) posting 1st and 2nd places finishes in the shot put, respectfully. Miller threw fouled on three of his six attempts as he tossed his second attempt 19.54 meters with Jenks coming in with 18.54 meters on his final attempt. Both marks serve as the #1 and #2 marks in the nation thus far and serve as NCAA qualifying throws.

David Parker (Fr.) finished 4th overall with a mark of 14.41 meters while teammate Lucas Moran (Fr.) finished 10th with a mark of 10.81 meters.

Carl Schmidt (Jr., Wiesbaden, Germany) and Terrel Johnson (Jr., Fountain, Colo.) rounded out the night for the ThunderWolves in the long jump as Schmidt finished 2nd place with a jump of 6.98 meters with Johnson finishing right behind him at 6.85 meters.

Jenks followed his performance with a 1st place finish in the weighted throw early on day 2 with a mark of 18.5 meters while Miller finished 3rd with a throw of 16.98 meters.

Nathan Hood (Gr., St. Davids, Grenada) crossed the finished line in 1:53.36 in the 800-meter run which converts to a 1:50.09 due to track size and altitude. The converted time is also a NCAA qualifying time and sits Hood at #1 on the national performance list. Reece Sharman-Newell (Fr.) kicked of his college debut in the 800-meter run with a 3rd-place finish and a converted time of 1:52.37 and is also good for a NCAA qualifying performance.

The women's side posted more strong performances with Yasmine Hernandez (Gr., Johnstown, Colo.) and Hailey Streff (Gr., Madison, S.D.) both setting NCAA qualifying times in the women's mile. Hernandez raced for a 4:59.74 which converted to a 4:47.94 while Streff finished in 5:01.32 which converted to a 4:49.46.

Julia Schwarzinger (Fr.) raced to a 1st-place finish in the 60-meter dash after crossing the line in 7.75 seconds while finishing 2nd in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.40 seconds. Also, in the 400-meter dash, Taylor Holland (So., Alamosa, Colo.) finished 4th with a time of 1:01.58 while teammate Erin Case (So., Parker, Colo.) finished 5th with a time of 1:02.22 seconds.

Mikayla Jones (So., Aurora, Colo.) capped off the ThunderWolves 1st-place finishes after leaping 1.64 meters in the long jump.

Both teams will be back in action on December 11th in Gunnison, Colorado for the Western Colorado Open.
