Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dominant Fourth Quarter Lifts Pack to First RMAC Win

PUEBLO, Colo. (Dec. 3, 2021) – After trailing in the fourth quarter, the Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (5-1, 1-0) caught fire and took its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs, 54-49.

The Mountain Lions and ThunderWolves fought hard throughout the entirety of the game. The first quarter kicked off with UCCS taking a 12-9 lead with 4:05 remaining in the opening period. The Pack were able to put together a 7-2 spurt at the end of the quarter capped off by a buzzer-beating layup from JaNaiya Davis.

Entering the second quarter with a tight 20-16 lead, the Pack were looking to make a run and extend their lead. The ThunderWolves were not able to put together a run of any kind and neither could the Mountain Lions. Both teams were only able to muster up eight points in the defensively dominated second period.

Headed into the break, the Pack were ahead 28-25, but the Mountain Lions came out of the locker room hunting for points. UCCS began the half on a 7-0 run and took a 31-28 lead before Ro Dominguez halted the spurt with a jumper.

UCCS was able to put together one more 6-0 run and then take a 41-36 lead over the Pack headed into the fourth and decisive quarter. The ThunderWolves were looking for a shift of momentum in front of the rambunctious Pack crowd.

The fourth started with the two teams trading blow-for-blow. With 7:02, Davis kicked off a strong run with a layup after she weaved through the UCCS defense. The 12-0 dominant run was capped off with a dagger 3-pointer from Jazzy Hughes off a dish from Amaya Lewis with 3:31 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After taking the 52-48 lead with just minutes to go, it was time for the ThunderWolves to flex and setup a strong defense. Some clutch free throws down the stretch clinched the 54-49 win over the Mountain Lions.

Despite a slew of offensive mistakes early on, the Pack were able to force 19 UCCS turnovers on the night with much thanks to Davis' game-high four steals.

Hughes, Lewis, and Davis each led the team with 12 points apiece while Lewis led the team with nine rebounds. Torie Bass and Dominguez each dished out three assists to help round out the Pack offensive performance.

The ThunderWolves have a quick turnaround following the close RMAC battle, as the team faces New Mexico Highlands University (3-4)in Massari Arena at 5:30 p.m. for another RMAC match-up.
