ThunderWolves Upset No.1 Lubbock Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (Nov. 13, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team played stout defense and out-rebounded the No. 1 Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps to walk away with a 64-56 win on Saturday afternoon at the CCU Event Center. The CSU Pueblo win snapped 39-game win streak for the Lady Chaps which spanned back to January 2019 and was the longest active streak in the nation.
 
The ThunderWolves jumped on the Lady Chaps early as Tomia Johnson (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) knocked down back-to-back 3's to start the game. JaNaiya Davis (Jr., Hewitt, Tex.) went coast-to-coast following a steal to extend the lead to 8-0 as the Pack scored 12 unanswered points before the Lady Chaps were able to get on the score board. The Pack made 9 of their 14 shots in the first quarter which included 3 of 5 from three-point territory and held LCU to 4-16 (25%) to take a 22-11 lead after the first quarter.
 
Alisha Davis (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) extended the CSU Pueblo lead to start the second quarter with a layup and Johnson followed it up with a mid-range bucket, but the back-to-back national champions weren't going away so easily. The Lady Chaps made two 3's back-to-back and later cut the lead to seven points before Johnson knocked down her third 3 -pointer with 3:57 remaining in the half to extend the Pack's lead back to double digits.
 
The ThunderWolves stayed stagnant for 3 minutes as the Lady Chaps slowly inched their way back into the game. LCU cut the lead down to 2 points before Ro Dominguez (Jr., Denver, Colo.) ended the run with 52 seconds left in the half. The Pack walked into the locker room at the break with a 31-28 advantage.
 
Johnson again came out of the break hot knocking down her fourth 3-pointer of the contest as the Pack found themselves up 6 points early in the third quarter. The Lady chaps then outscored the ThunderWolves 17-8 and held the Pack to 22.2% shooting. The Lady Chaps extended their lead to as much as 5 points in the third and went into the fourth quarter with a 45-42 lead.
 
Another hot start to a quarter saw Alisha Davis knock down back-to-back 3-pointers from the top of the key before Ro Dominguez connected on a 3-pointer of her own to give the Pack a 51-47 lead with 5:59 remaining in the game. The shots were part of a 10-0 run the ThunderWolves were able to put together within a 3-minute span.
 
Two free-throws from LCU cut the lead to 6 points with 2:54 left int he game as the Lady Chaps stepped up their defensive efforts in hopes for some stops. The Pack had other plans, executed a play for Alisha Davis who connected of the glass to extend the ThunderWolves lead to 8 points at the 2-minute mark.
 
With tension rising, clock winding, and the Lady Chaps in desperate need of a stop, LCU picked up the pressure on defense. The efforts saw the ThunderWolves scramble around on offense before JaNaiya Davis saved a ball from going out of bounds and heaved up a prayer from the corner to beat the shot clock and inch the knife in deeper to the Packs lead with 1:22 remaining in the game. Davis followed the shot up by connecting on 5 of 6 free throws to ice the game as the ThunderWolves walked away with a 64-56 win over No.1 Lubbock Christian.  
 
Alisha Davis tabbed her first double-double with the ThunderWolves after going for 18 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson was next in line for the Pack after knocking down 14 points, 5 rebounds and an assist while JaNaiya Davis added 13 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
 
As a team, the Pack out rebounded the Lady Chaps 41-23 with 11 of those rebounds coming on the offensive side while holding LCU to 35.3% shooting from the field.
 
The ThunderWolves will be back in action next weekend to open the home portion of their schedule in the Al Kaly Classic. The Pack will take on Fort Carson in an exhibition game on Friday and Park University on Saturday, both games at 5 pm at Massari Arena.
