HAYS, Kan. (February 23, 2020) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball knocked off Fort Hays State University 11-4 Sunday to complete the series win.
The victory was the 1,200th in the managing career of
Stan Sanchez at all levels. Sanchez now owns 869 career wins at CSU-Pueblo.
Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) whacked four hits in four trips to the dish including a double and a triple. He reached base five times thanks to a walk. Gonzalez had two RBIs and scored twice.
Ty Lewis (Jr., Pleasant Grove, Utah) mashed three hits in a 3-for-5 performance. Lewis hit his first triple with the Pack. He also scored twice and totaled two RBIs.
Aidan Welch (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) clubbed his first home run of the season. Welch came through with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Daniel Abiles (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz.) and
JP Hopkins (R-Sr., Chino Hills, Calif.) each blasted their first home runs of 2020. Abiles finished with two RBIs.
Back-to-back doubles allowed the Tigers to take a 1-0 lead in the first.
Blake Slaymaker (Jr., Johnstown, Colo.) stranded two runners in the first. He allowed just one run in two innings.
The Pack fought back in the fourth. CSU-Pueblo scored five runs in the fourth. Gonzalez got the scoring started for the Pack with a double that drove in
Cody Beck (Jr., Brighton, Colo.). Lewis followed with a two-run triple. He scored on a
Billy Reyes (R-Sr., Yucaipa, Calif.) groundout. Abiles homered to cap the scoring in the five-run fourth.
The ThunderWolves tacked on three more in the fifth. Welch launched his first dinger of the season. Gonzalez scored on a sacrifice fly from Abiles.
Reggie Williams (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) cranked a double that scored Lewis to make it 8-1.
Fort Hays State added three runs in seventh to claw back within four. The Pack ended any dreams of a comeback with three runs in the eighth. Hopkins hammered a home run.
Easton Adler (Sr., Mead, Colo.) scored on a Welch sacrifice fly. Gonzalez belted a triple that scored Beck to make it 11-4.
Logan Gibbons (Sr., Taylorsville, Utah) closed the door for the Pack. He threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
JC Hatch (Sr., Corona, Calif.) earned the win with 4.1 innings of work, the longest appearance of his career. He is now 1-0 on the season.
After winning the series against the Tigers 3-1, the Pack now stands 6-4 overall. The Tigers fell to 10-6.
CSU-Pueblo will now return home for a three-game non-conference series against Adams State University. The Pack and Grizzlies will start this series Friday Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
