Pack shuts out Sioux Falls in DH split

PUEBLO, COLO. (February 15, 2020) – A dominating pitching performance led Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball to a 5-0 win over the University of Sioux Falls. However, the Pack was forced to settle for a doubleheader split after losing their afternoon game to Montana State University Billings 16-9 at Rawlings Field.
 
Cole Martin (Jr., Ridgecrest, Calif.) dominated the Cougars in the first game. Martin threw seven scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and two walks. Martin struck out seven.
 
The righty carried a perfect game into the fourth and a no hitter into the fifth. Martin earned the win, his first in a Pack uniform. No runner advanced past second base on Martin.
 
DeVaughn Gales (Jr., Magnolia, Ark.) delivered a breakout performance. Gales went 3-for-4 in each game. He scored three runs and drove in three more between the two contests. He had a .778 OBP on the day.
 
The Pack got going early in game one. Easton Adler (Sr., Mead, Colo.) led off the first inning with a single. Adler stole a base. Gales crushed a double that plated Adler and put the Pack up 1-0.
 
Martin threw up zeros for the first six innings. However, it remained a one-run game until the bottom of the sixth. Gales led off the inning with a single. Reggie Williams (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) singled as well. Stone Romero (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) slashed a triple that drove in Gales and pinch runner JP Hopkins (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif.). Romero came home on a Cody Beck (Jr., Brighton, Calif.) base knock. Beck's RBI single to make it 4-0.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Pack added one more run. Billy Reyes (R-Sr., Yucaipa, Calif.) drew a walk and stole a base. Reyes scored on a Gales single to make it 5-0.
 
Blake Slaymaker (R-Jr., Johnstown, Colo.) pitched the last two innings. Slaymaker completed the two-hit shutout for the Pack, surrendering just one hit. He struck out two in his Pack debut.
 
In game two, Montana State Billings scored the game's first 11 runs in just five innings.. However, the Pack would not go away. The ThunderWolves pushed their first run across in the sixth. Aidan Welch (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) tripled and later scored on a Williams ground out.
 
The Pack erupted for eight runs in the seventh. Reyes mashed the Pack's first home run of the season. His solo shot was part of a 2-for-5 showing in game two.
Lucas Montoya-Kaber (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Adrian Campos (Jr., Mission Hills, Calif.) each doubled in the seventh for their first Pack hits. Gales scored two runs in the seventh as the Pack sent 11 batters to the dish. They trailed 11-9 after seven.
 
The Yellow Jackets cooled the Pack's momentum with a five-run eighth. They would hold on to win 16-9.
 
CSU-Pueblo will hit the road for the first time this season Friday when they visit Fort Hays State for a four-game series. First pitch between the Pack and Tigers is set for 2 p.m.
