ThunderWolves battle No. 24 Mavericks in hard-fought contest

PUEBLO, Colo. (December 19, 2020) –  For three quarters, Colorado State University Pueblo Women's Basketball kept pace with No. 24 Colorado Mesa University, but in the fourth quarter the Mavericks pulled away with an 81-67 win at Massari Arena.
 
Turning Point:
Midway through the fourth quarter, the ThunderWolves (0-3, 0-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) trailed by six. The Mavericks scored the next five points to push their lead to double digits and held the Pack scoreless for nearly three minutes.
 
CSU Pueblo also shot just 28.6 percent in the fourth quarter compared to 55.6 percent for the Mavericks. Colorado Mesa attempted 16 free throws in the fourth quarter alone.

Individual Highlights:
 - Sydni Williams (Sr., Little Rock, Ark.) totaled 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Williams also was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line.  

- JaNaiya Davis (Jr., Waco, Texas) scored a team-high 22 points for the Pack. Davis had two blocks, three steals, and four assists. She made 8-of-9 from the free throw line.  Her and Williams accounted for all of the Pack's makes from the charity stripe.
 
- Jazzy Hughes (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) led the Pack with 10 rebounds.
 
- Jalen Long (So., Moreno Valley, Calif.) sank three 3-pointers on her way to a season-high 11 points. Long went 4-of-8 from the field.
 
Coach Johnson Quote:
"I don't think the score and our record show how much better we've gotten over the last week and a half," said CSU Pueblo Head Women's Basketball Coach Tommie Johnson. "These girls are working hard. I'm proud of them."

Notes:
- The two teams were called for 50 fouls combined. The Mavericks took 37 free throws, the most by a RMAC team in a game this season. CSU Pueblo attempted 20 free throws.
 
- The Pack made 5-of-11 from 3-point land in the opening quarter. 

Up Next:
The ThunderWolves will head into the holiday break. They return to action Saturday Jan. 2 when they travel to Lakewood, Colo. to face Colorado Christian University at 2 p.m.
