Top ranked Mavs defense slows Pack

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (January 11, 2020) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Women's Basketball could not overcome No. 21 Colorado Mesa University or their top ranked defense in a 59-41 loss Saturday at Brownson Arena.
 
Ranked No.1 in D-II in points allowed per game, the Mavericks limited the ThunderWolves to 41 points, matching their lowest output of the season. This included just four points in the second quarter, where the Mavericks built their lead to double digits.  
 
Khiya Adams (Sr., Falcon, Colo.) had nine points on 4-of-9 shooting. Adams also swatted both of the Pack's two blocks Saturday.
 
JaNaiya Davis (So., Hewitt, Texas) led the Pack with 10 points and seven rebounds. She came away with two steals.
 
Kansas Watts (So., Houston, Texas) netted eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field. Harmony Pettis (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) added seven points.
 
Reilly Dunn (So., Fort Collins, Colo.) totaled a career-high five rebounds. She scored two points.
 
The Pack came out strong. They seized a 10-7 lead in the first quarter. The Mavericks rallied and took an 18-16 lead after one.
 
Colorado Mesa came out in the second quarter on an 11-2 run. They carried a 35-20 lead into the half.
 
The ThunderWolves kept pace with the Mavericks for the third quarter and most of the fourth. However, they could not close the gap as Colorado Mesa came away with a 59-41 victory.
 
The Pack now stands 3-11 with a 2-7 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Mavericks improved to 13-2 (9-0 RMAC).
 
CSU-Pueblo will now return home for a four-game homestand. This homestand starts Friday when the Pack host Chadron State College at 5:30 p.m.
