PUEBLO, Colo. (March 24, 2019) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's lacrosse team battled with No. 7 Regis University Sunday, but lost the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest, 16-9.
The ThunderWolves (3-4, 1-1 RMAC) held their own against the undefeated Rangers (9-0, 2-0 RMAC) and trailed by just two at the half, but the nationally-ranked visitors scored six of the first seven goals of the second half to pull away.
CSU-Pueblo won the draw control category 14-13. Regis scored on three of its nine free position shots, while the Pack netted two of their five attempts. The Rangers finished with 36 total shots with 29 on goal, while the ThunderWolves had 24 shots and 18 on goal.
Senior attack
Allison Wurscher (Tigard, Ore.) totaled three of her four goals in the first half, while senior midfielder
Taylor Christensen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) netted three of her four goals in the second frame. Christensen also added a team-high eight draw controls, a team-best five ground balls and the most caused turnovers with three of the team's eight.
Sophomore
Emily Brewer (D, St. Louis, Mo.) finished the game with four ground balls and one caused turnover.
Senior goalie
Ane Marie Horton (Long Beach, Calif.) had another strong performance in the cage and totaled 13 saves with two ground balls.
Regis scored the first three goals and led 3-0 with 16:33 left in the first half. Christensen got the Pack on the board just 30 seconds later to make it 3-1, then Wurscher scored her first of the game at 11:11 to get the home team within one.
The Rangers found a goal a few minutes later, but Wurcher's second came with 5:08 remaining in the half to get the ThunderWolves within one again at 4-3. RU scored just 12 seconds later to go up two again and then Wurscher netted a hat trick with 2:09 left in the half. Regis would score one more with just 34 ticks left to hand the road team a 6-4 lead at the break.
Again it was all Regis to start the second half, as they scored the first three goals of the new frame to open a 9-4 lead. Sophomore
Emily Eller (A, Keller, Texas) netted a goal with 21:20 left, but the Rangers would score three more unanswered to break open a 12-5 lead with 15 minutes left in regulation.
The ThunderWolves scored the next three goals, two by Christensen with a Wurscher goal in the middle to force a Regis timeout and the Pack trailing by just four at 12-8 with 11:51 remaining.
The Rangers came out and scored a minute later to get their advantage back to five. Christensen scored again for her fourth of the game with 7:38 left, but RU tallied the last three goals of the game, including two in the final minute, to take the RMAC contest by seven, 16-9.
Next up is another home game, this time a nonconference affair with Adams State University, March 27 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
