Hopkins & Williams breakout in Pack's DH loss

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 22, 2019) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball dropped both games of their doubleheader against Angelo State University Friday at Rawlings Field. The Rams topped the Pack 10-4 in game one and took game two 17-9.
 
JP Hopkins (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.) keyed the Pack's offense Friday. Hopkins clubbed six hits in seven trips. He also scored three runs and drove in two more. Starting in left field in both games, Hopkins slashed two doubles and a triple He is now hitting .643 on the season.
 
Making his first career start in game two, Reggie Williams (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) delivered. Williams went 3-for-4 in game two. He knocked in three runs and scored twice. Williams whacked a double for his first career extra base hit.
 
Gilbert Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) scored a run in each game. Sauceda smacked a two-run triple in game two. The Pack's first baseman finished 3-for-10.
 
Stone Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) made an impact in game two. Romero reached base twice in the night cap and drove in two runs. 
 
The Pack got off to a good start in game one. Hopkins hammered a two-run double in the second. Daniel Abiles (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) drove in Hopkins to put the Pack up 3-0.
 
Angelo State got one run in the third and two in the fourth. The tying running came when Jackson Hardy stole home.
 
This steal of home seemed to give the Rams momentum. They scored six runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to jump out to a 10-3. lead The Pack scored one in the final frame of the seven inning game but fell 10-4,
 
Pack starter Beau Briekse (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) struck out seven batters in four innings. He maintained his RMAC lead in strikeouts, but took the loss. Briekse is now 1-2 on the year.
 
The Rams leapt out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the fourth. This chased Pack starter Josh Dahl (Sr., Glendale, Ariz.) who struck out five in 3.2 innings.
 
CSU-Pueblo countered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sauceda tied the game with a two-run triple. He scored the go-ahead run on a Rion Santamaria (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) single.
 
The Pack's lead was short-lived. Angelo State answered with a seven-run fifth that put them in front 12-6. The Pack closed back within three thanks to a pair of RBI-knocks from Williams. Angelo State scored the last five runs as they pulled away with a 17-9 win.
 
The Pack issues 15 walks in game two. They committed three errors in each game.  Rocco Arguto (So., Pueblo, Colo.) took the loss for the Pack. He is now 1-1.
 
This series between the Pack and Rams continues Saturday at Rawlings Field. First pitch has been moved to 1 p.m. (MTN) time due to weather expected to hit the Pueblo area overnight.
