Johnson & Pack’s dream debut derailed by defending champs

PUEBLO, Colo. (November 8, 2019) – In their first game of the season, Colorado State University-Pueblo Women's Basketball fell to No. 2 Lubbock Christian University 77-60 Friday at Massari Arena in the 36th annual Al Kaly Shrine Classic.
 
Sydni Williams (Jr., Little Rock, Colo.) scored a team-high 15 points. Williams went 4-for-7 from the field and 7-of-9 from the line. She narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds, also a team-high.
 
Khiya Adams (Sr., Falcon, Colo.) matched Williams with a team-high 15 points. Adams went 6-fo-15 from the field. She went 3-of-6 from downtown. Adams only had two career 3-pointers entering the game. Adams tacked on six rebounds and a block.
 
Hanna Diaz (Jr., Peyton, Colo.) scored 11 points in just 17 minutes.  Diaz drained 3-of-7 from downtown and picked up a pair of steals.
 
JaNaiya Davis (So., Hewitt, Texas) dished out six assists and played the full 40 minutes. Davis delivered 8 points and eight rebounds. Davis blocked a team-high two shots.
 
Lubbock Christian, the defending NCAA D-II Champions, lived up to their reputation. They shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and made eight three-pointers.
 
In the first quarter, the Chaps went on a 15-1 run that made it 21-8. This run propelled LCU to a 47-28 lead at halftime.
 
The Pack fought back in the third quarter. They trimmed the Chaps lead to 11 in the waning seconds of the third. CSU-Pueblo won the third quarter 17-11. The Pack would not get any closer as the Chaps kept the lead at double digits rolling to a 77-60 win. CSU-Pueblo held LCU to a 34.6 shooting percentage in the second half.
 
New CSU-Pueblo Head Coach Tommie Johnson will seek his first win Saturday Nov. 9 when the Pack hosts Texas A&M University Commerce at 5:30 p.m. The Lions enter Saturday's showdown at 1-0 after beating Metro State University Denver Friday.
