Espinoza’s record-setting performance lifts Pack past Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (November 1, 2019) – A record-setting performance from Jazzy Espinoza propelled Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball to a five-set (25-20, 23-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-12) win over Westminster College Friday.
 
Espinoza (So., Cheyenne, Wyo.) set a Pack record with a .727 hitting percentage, the best by a ThunderWolf in a five-set match in CSU-Pueblo history. This hitting percentage broke Samantha Connelly's school record of .615 set on Sept. 5, 2003.
 
Friday, Espinoza knocked down 16 kills on 22 attacks. She did not commit a single hitting error. Espinoza's 16 kills stand as a season high. Defensively, Espinoza swatted eight blocks, including five solo blocks.
 
Brooke Schilling (Jr., Platteville, Colo.) totaled a team-high 18 kills. With the Pack's back against the wall, 13 of the Schilling's 18 kills came in the last two sets.
 
Kyle Meltzer (Jr., Fort Collins, Colo.) picked up her first double-double of the season. Meltzer finished with 17 digs and 11 assists.
 
Grace Hern (So., Omaha, Neb.) also earned a double-double. Hern handed out 21 assists and came up with 10 digs. Kelsey Bell (Sr., Los Lunas, N.M.) and Grace Jansen (Fr., South Jordan, Utah) each collected 15 assists.
 
Maddy Wisniewski (Jr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) knocked down 13 kills. Fellow right side, Payton Stack (Jr., Casper, Wyo.) batted down eight kills and hit .333
 
Senior Page Heller (Vancouver, Wash.) had eight digs to move within one of the Pack's top 10 in career digs. She led the Pack with two aces.
 
The Pack raced out to an 8-3 lead in the first set. They led by as many as nine at 20-11. The Griffins closed within four, but the Pack won the first set 25-20. Espinoza had seven kills in the first set.
 
Westminster answered winning the second set thanks to a 3-0 run that made it 25-23. The Griffins rushed the Pack in the third taking the first seven points en route to a 25-14 set win.
 
The Pack and Schilling woke up in the fourth. Trailing 15-10, the Pack went on a 7-1 run that allowed them to reclaim the lead and roll to a 25-22. Schilling had eight kills in the fourth set to force a fifth frame.
 
In the fifth, the Pack and Griffins traded runs. With the fifth frame tied at 12, the Pack scored the final three points to close out the Griffins 15-12. Espinoza, Wisniewski, and Bell had the final three kills for the victorious Pack.
 
The win boosts the Pack to 11-12 on the season. They now own an 8-6 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Westminster dropped to 4-18 (1-13 RMAC).
 
CSU-Pueblo will continue its road trip Saturday at Dixie State University. First serve between the Pack and Trailblazers is set for 6 p.m.
