Williams, Maness win 3000m run to guide ThunderWolves at MLK Invitational

RESULTS

ALBUQUERQUE (January 20, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo track and field programs competed at the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque, hosted by University of New Mexico.

More than 800 collegiate and professional athletes competed at the meet with more than 20 programs from all levels. The No. 21 CSU-Pueblo men's program totaled four NCAA Provisional times, while sophomore Gillian Maness (Kalispell, Mont.) guided the Pack women with a win in the 3000m run.

Senior Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.) recorded a time of 8:25.61 in the 3000m run to win the event by six seconds. His time was converted to 8:13.15 for an NCAA Provisional time and ranks ninth nationally. Junior Marcelo Laguera (Chihuahua, Mexico) was fourth in the race with a time of 8:35.63. His time was converted to 8:22.93 and is an NCAA Division II provisional time that ranks 16th. Sophomore Paul Roberts (Bulder, Colo.) was eighth with a time of 8:40.05.

Competing for the first time this season, Devundrick Walker (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) ran the 800m run in 1:51.46 to finish fourth. The time converted to 1:50.84 to just miss the NCAA automatic time. His provisional mark ranks fourth in Division II.

The ThunderWolves had five student-athletes finish in the top nine of the mile. Sophomore Thomas Staines (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a time of 4:16.61 to finist third, while his time converted to 4:11.02 to slide just under the NCAA Provisional time and rank 15th nationally. Roberts ran the race in 4:20.09 to win his heat and finish fourth overall. Laguera was sixth in the event with a time of 4:21.15. Zach Retzlaff (So., Pueblo West, Colo.) was eighth and Alec Choury (So., Westminster, Colo.) was ninth with times of 4"22.40 and 4:24.97, respectfully. 

The 4x400m relay team was fourth with a time of 3:17.39. The foursome was made up of Shawn Horne (Jr., Camp Casey, South Korea), Staines, Walker and Dueth Vassell (Sr., Aurora, Colo.). The time converted to 3:17.83 to just sit outside the NCAA Provisional time. 

Vassell finished fourth in his heat and 14th in the 400m dash with a time of 49.38.

Maness won the 3000m run with at time of 10:22.57. The time converted to 10:07.23 to rank 20th nationally. She also finished 10th in the mile with a time of 5:15.28 that won her heat and establish a personal best. 

Freshman Hailey Streff (Fr., Madison, S.D.) ran a personal best in the 800m run and finished 11th with at ime off 2:23.15.

In the field events, senior Angelique Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.) was 13th in the high jump with her top leap of 1.61m. Jenna McKinley (So., Mosca, Colo.) was 18th in the shot put with a top throw of 12.46m. 

Next up for the ThunderWolves is the Division II Invite & Multi at the Steinhauer Fieldhouse in Golden, Colorado Jan. 26-27.
