CHADRON, Neb. (February 11, 2017) - PT Garcia (R-So., Denver, Colo.) recorded his second upset victory of the week Saturday to help guide the No. 13 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team to a 29-9 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win at Chadron State College. The Pack wrapped the dual season with an 11-5 record, 5-2 in league play.
The ThunderWolves won seven of the 10 bouts and totaled two pins and a tech fall.
Garcia won 6-0 at 133 against No. 6 Taylor Summers, just two days after heading to Adams State University and downing No. 7 Martin Ramirez (9-5). He will head to the NCAA Super Region Four Championships with a 12-4 record.
No. 4 JaCobi Jones (Jr., Omaha, Neb.) recorded his fifth fall at 165 this season with a first period pin at 2:18. At 149, Clay Archer (R-So., Broken Arrow, Okla.) trailed 8-5 in his bout, but pulled out a last second pin at 6:59.
No. 4 JaVaughn Perkins (R-Fr., Omaha, Neb.) produced a technical fall at 184 to get the dual started. His 17-0 win scored five points for the Pack and was followed by a 11-7 decision win for Cody Johnson (Jr., Broken Arrow, Okla.) at 197.
The Eagles won the next two bouts by decision and after four matches the Pack lead was 8-6.
CSU-Pueblo won the next five bouts, as Garcia's win, then a Jared Mestas (Jr., Pueblo, Pueblo, Colo.) sudden victory decision (9-7) at 141 gave the Pack a 14-6 lead.
Kyle Fantin (R-So., Crave Creek, Ariz.) mixed in an 8-2 decision win between Archer and Jones' pin falls and the Pack were ahead 29-6 headed to the last bout.
The ThunderWolves now have two weeks to prepare for the region championships, hosted by Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., Feb. 24-25.The top four finishers from each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Birmingham, Ala. March 10-11.
