LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 22, 2014) — Placing three players amongst the top 10, including individual co-champion Julie Sanchez (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.), the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves won their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Golf Title in the last three years by a 15-shot margin on Tuesday here at The WigWam Golf Resort.
The Pack finished Tuesday's second round with a team score of 308 and the 2-day, 36-hole tournament with a score of 621, easily out-pacing runner-up Colorado Mesa, which finished at 636, Colorado Christian and the rest of the 10-team field.
Colorado Christian, which was five shots behind the ThunderWolves after Monday's play, finished third at 640.
The ThunderWolves, who had won four regular season tournament titles, had won their initial conference crown in 2012 and took second behind Western New Mexico last year.
In the individual standings, Sanchez carded a Tuesday round of 2-over par 74 on the 6,172-yard course on Tuesday finishing the tournament with a 36-hole total of 152 (+8). Colorado Christian's Katrina Mendez posted an even par round to share the co-champion honors.
The shared win is the second of the year for the Pueblo Central High School product, who had also taken individual honors at the Lady Buff Stampede in October.
Meanwhile, sophomore Leina Kim (Saipan, CNMI) tied for third, just one shot back at 153 (+9). She also posted a 74 on Tuesday following her Monday round of 79. Kim won three individual tournaments throughout the season.
ThunderWolf seniors Domi DiNallo (Elephant Butte, N.M.) and Michaela Breit (Greely, Colo.) both posted rounds of 80 on Tuesday. DiNallo tied for eighth with a 2-day total of 156 (+12) while Breit tied for 12th at 160 (+16).
Sophomore Katie Maglia (Pueblo, Colo.) rounded out the Pack squad finishing 46th with a 2-day total of 196. She carded a 96 on Tuesday.
As there are no automatic berths to the NCAA Division II Tournament for conference champions in women's golf, it is likely that the Pack's season as a team has ended on a high note.
However, Kim and Sanchez are leading contenders for berths in the May 5-7 West Super Regional that will be played in Mansfield, Texas as individuals. That announcement of nine teams and four individuals from the super region is slated for next Monday (Apr. 28) and will be made on www.ncaa.com.
