ThunderWolves lose in the final minutes

Durango, Colo (Gothunderwolves.com - Oct. 20, 2013) The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's soccer team has lost the past two games on a goal in the final minutes of the match.

On Sunday, it happened again.

The ThunderWolves lost a defensive bout vs. the Fort Lewis Skyhawks 1-0 by a goal in the 87th minute.

"Of course it's frustrating, you want to finish the game strong," said head coach Paul Regrutto. "To give those goals up in the game, it's definitely tough."

The goal came from a header by Madyson Wellcome, following a corner kick, assisted by Emma Cannis.

"It was just kind of a little scramble in the box," Regrutto said. "It wasn't a great opportunity."

The ThunderWolves, who were missing four starters on the day due to injuries, personal issues or suspensions from red cards, took three shots, zero coming on goal, compared to 27 shots, 10 coming on goal for the Skyhawks. In addition, the Pack took zero corner kicks, to 14 by the Skyhawks.

"We had two subs today," Regrutto said. When you're mising four starters, it's a major thing. When you don't have any depth, when you can't run as many players as they can, they can stay fresh, and that makes a big difference in the game."

Preseason All-RMAC goalkeeper Savannah Thompson (Sr. Upland, Calif.) finished the game with nine saves in 10 chances.

"I thought Savannah did well," Regrutto said. "We leaned on her pretty heavily today."

Next up, the ThunderWolves will take on the fifth ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Oct. 25 at the Rawlings Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

"They're a good team and we're going to expect to play hard against any team," Regrutto said. "We'll respond well and I feel we can play a good game against Mines."
