Taylor and Kliesen score first career goals in loss
ALAMOSA, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Oct. 7, 2011) - Being down 2-0 can sometimes be a deal breaker for most teams but to the CSU-Pueblo women's soccer team it simply means it's time to kick it in gear. The Pack almost scored their second comeback in two weeks falling short in overtime to Adams State 4-3.
The first half was mostly dominated by the Grizzlies with two goals from Jessica Hellweg and Allie Mercado. But at half with time to regroup the Pack came out firing and looked sure to make a comeback on the Grizzlies.
Six minutes into the half a foul allowed Morgan Purkey (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) to set up a free kick that she curved in to find Brittany Taylor (Jr., Carol Stream, Ill.). Taylor finished off the precise pass cutting the deficit to one with plenty of time to spare.
The Grizzlies didn't go away easily with Hellweg connecting on her second goal of the game after a shot from the top of the box found the back of the net.
The Pack showed no quit and pushed the Grizzlies to the limit again with Taylor scoring her second goal of the day on a beautiful corner kick by Gabby Gonzales (Sr., Centennial, Colo.). Taylor was able to finish the goal on the far post for her second career goal as a ThunderWolf.
Erin Stephens (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) kept the team in the game to allow for a dramatic finish with two spectacular saves in 1v1 situations to keep the deficit to one.
With two minutes remaining in the game CSU-Pueblo Brittany Kliesen (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) saved the best time to score her first career goal. Kliesen cut the ball back to the left side and fired a rocket from deep that beat the keeper on the far post.
The Pack tried to carry the momentum they had from the late goal into overtime but a goal by Jenezza Sandoval cut the comeback short.
The team will get the rest of the weekend off before returning to the pitch Wednesday when they travel to play UC-Colorado Springs.
