New Mexico Highlands 2, CSU-Pueblo 1
Two early goals by New Mexico Highlands left the Pack searching
for answers Friday as the ThunderWolves fell to the Cowgirls 2-1 in
Las Vegas, N.M.
The Pack falls to 1-4-1 and 0-2 in RMAC play with the loss.
New Mexico Highlands scored its first goal in the 15th minute,
then its second in the 25th minute before the field was barely
warm. The Pack did its best to make up the deficit, and was
able to create a fair amount of opportunities for the rest of the
match. After getting outshot 8-4 in the first half, the
ThunderWolves outshot the Cowgirls 9-5 in the second half.
One of those shots was an unassisted goal by Brittani
Montgomery (Fr., El Paso, Tex.) in the 74th minute,
the Pack's advance proved to be too little, too late.
The loss marks the first time since 2005 that Pack has fallen to
the Cowgirls, as they entered the contest having won six straight
over New Mexico Highlands. In the history of the series,
Highlands has won just four times in 20 tries vs. the Pack.
CSU-Pueblo will return home Sunday for its first ever meeting
vs. Nebraska-Kearney, which is starting its women's soccer program
this season. The match begins at noon.
