Mike McCarty enters his second season as the ThunderWolves offensive coordinator.
McCarty brought 18 years of offensive coordinator experience to CSU-Pueblo and came to the Pack with nearly 30 years of coaching background.
In 2018, the ThunderWolves went 11-2 overall and with a 9-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record, the Pack shared the 2018 RMAC Championship. Two members of the offense were named All-Americans, as Preston Guerra (So., TE, Peoria, Ariz.) and Brayton Medina (Sr., OL, Colorado Springs, Colo.) received the honor. A total of seven players from the offense were named All-RMAC. The Pack rushing attack average 250.8 yards per game to lead the conference and rank 16th nationally. CSU-Pueblo averaged 36.5 points per game to sit 25th in Division II.
McCarty has extensive recruiting experience, with an emphasis on the west coast and gulf states. He has coached in two bowl games (New Orleans Bowl in 2005 and Independence Bowl in 1988) and appeared in the FCS playoffs in 1995 and 1998. Other highlights include a Sun Belt Conference Championship in 2005 with Arkansas State University and serving as offensive coordinator at Hofstra University when it had the No. 3 ranked offense in I-AA.
Most recently, McCarty was at University of Central Arkansas (2014-16). From 2011-13 he served as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Holmes College where he coached quarterbacks and developed, scripted and implemented the offensive game plan.
He was the quarterbacks coach at Bryant University from 2009-2011 after a stint as the wide receivers coach at Arkansas State from 2004-07. While at ASU, the Red Wolves won the Sun Belt Conference championship and participated in the New Orleans Bowl.
During his time as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Stony Brook University (2001-03), the Seawolves offense ranked No. 1 in the conference with both the rushing and passing game sitting No. 2 in the league.
McCarty spent 1999-2001 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Nicholls State University and was responsible for all areas of the offensive game plan and also served as the academic coordinator.
As a member of the Troy University coaching staff from 1997-99, McCarty coached the wide receivers and participated in the FCS Playoffs in 1998.
He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Illinois State University (1996-97) and at Hofstra (1994-96). While at Hofstra, he appeared in the FCS Playoffs in 1995 and had the No. 3 offense in the nation with the rushing game ranking No. 5 and the pass game at No. 8 nationally.
McCarty was the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Southeast Missouri State after earning his first offensive coordinator job at Oregon Tech University from 1991-92.
McCarty was a graduate assistant coach where he was a student-athlete, the University of Oregon, from 1988-90 when the Ducks participated in the Independence Bowl (1990).
He graduated from Portland State in 1988 with a bachelors of science degree in history after playing at Oregon.
McCarty comes from a pedigree of coaching, as his father, Don McCarty, was a highly successful and nationally recognized high school coach in the state of Oregon for nearly 40 years. Don McCarty is a member of the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame.
McCarty and wife, Kim, were high school sweethearts and have been married for 30 years. The couple has two grown children, daughter Macy, and son Beau.
