Mike Massaro rejoined the CSU Pueblo coaching staff in August 2021 as an assistant coach.
This is Massaro’s second time on the ThunderWolves staff after serving as an assistant coach from 2008-2020. He also played his collegiate baseball at CSU Pueblo from 2003-05.
Over his first stint with the Thunderwolves, he was the hitting coach, while also coaching third base and the outfielders. Off the field, Massaro assisted managed scouting reports, recruiting, and also led the fundraising efforts for the CSU Pueblo baseball program.
During his first 13 years as an assistant coach with the Thunderwolves, he helped the program to 11 RMAC Tournament appearances along with tournament crowns in 2009 and 2013. Massaro also helped CSU Pueblo to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009, 2013 and 2015. The 2015 campaign featured the Thunderwolves ranked eighth overall in the country.
CSU Pueblo has compiled a record of 355-287 with Massaro on the coaching staff while going 254-189 in the RMAC. He also helped produce 40 All-RMAC honorees and a pair of conference Gold Glove outfielders. Massaro also helped guide Chase Lacomb and Jordan Goman to RMAC Player of the Year honors in 2012 and 2016, respectively.
Massaro was drafted in the 13th round of the MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics and played within Oakland’s farm system from 2005-09 competing at the AAA level. In 2005, he was selected as the Northwest League Player of the Month in July with the Vancouver Canadiens and was named to the Midwest League All-Star Team in 2007 with the Kane County Cougars.
Following his time with Oakland Athletics, he played for the Gary Southshore Railcats in the American Association of Professional Baseball from 2009-2012. Massaro was named 2009 All-Star and holds numerous franchise records including batting average and triples.
As a player at CSU Pueblo, Massaro was a two-time All-RMAC selection and was named to the All-Tournament team twice in his career. In 2005, he was named to the All-Tournament Team as a pitcher and an outfielder. Massaro also paced the Thunderwolves to the conference tournament in each of his three seasons along with conference regular season and tournament titles in 2004. The 2004 CSU Pueblo squad also earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Massaro is also the head basketball coach at Pueblo East High School where he was named the South Central League Coach of the Year in 2020 and guided the team to the state championship in 2014, the state semifinals in 2019 and state quarterfinals in 2020.
Massaro completed his bachelor’s degree in exercise science, health promotion and recreation from CSU Pueblo in 2012.
He currently resides in Pueblo.
