MONTROSE, Colo. – The No. 19 Colorado State University Pueblo men's golf team opened play Monday at the San Juan Intercollegiate, completing 36 holes at The Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose, Colorado.
The ThunderWolves posted matching rounds of 280 on Monday to finish the opening day at 560, eight-under-par, and sit in fifth place entering Tuesday's final round. The Bridges played as a par-71, 7,017-yard layout for the tournament.
CSU Pueblo opened the tournament with a four-under 280 in the first round before matching that score during the afternoon session.
Jake Johnston led the way for the Pack through the opening 36 holes, finishing Monday tied for fifth individually at five-under-par 137. Johnston opened with an even-par 71 before catching fire in the second round with a five-under 66, the lowest round of the day for the ThunderWolves.
Parker Shaw also finds himself inside the top 15 after two rounds, sitting tied for 12th at three-under 139. Shaw provided the Pack with its best opening round of the tournament, firing a six-under 65 before following with a 74 in round two.
Cole Kratz closed Monday tied for 31st at one-over 143. After opening with a 74, Kratz responded with a two-under 69 during the second round.
Paraic McGrath sits tied for 40th at two-over 144 following rounds of 70 and 74, while Callum Kenneally is tied for 50th at four-over 146 after carding rounds of 75 and even-par 71.
Luke Shelton is also representing CSU Pueblo as an individual this week. Shelton finished the first 36 holes tied for 31st at one-over 143 after shooting a two-under 69 in the opening round and a 74 in round two.
Colorado Christian holds the team lead after Monday at 541, while Western New Mexico sits second at 556. Tournament host Colorado Mesa is third at 557, with Colorado School of Mines one stroke back in fourth at 558. CSU Pueblo sits just two shots behind Mines and three behind Colorado Mesa heading into the final round.
The San Juan Intercollegiate concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes from The Bridges Golf & Country Club.
