GUNNISON, Colo. – A late goal from Baylie Reedy helped Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer earn a 1-1 draw against Western Colorado Thursday evening in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener at Katy O. Rady Field.
With the result, CSU Pueblo moves to 2-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in RMAC play, while Western Colorado moves to 2-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference action.
"Firstly, credit to Western Colorado. I thought they passed us off the field first half and deserved to be 1-0 up after 45." said Pack Head Coach John Constable. "However, I am really proud of our players for turning the game on its head in the 2nd half. I thought we showed our quality, resilience, grit and adaptability to grind out the point. Away from home for a conference opener is never easy but for the second game in a row, we have kept going and scored late to pick up a result."
The ThunderWolves found themselves trailing 1-0 at halftime after Western Colorado's Jordan Welsh broke the scoreless tie in the 44th minute. Welsh scored with 1:26 remaining in the opening half to send the Mountaineers into the break with the advantage.
Western controlled much of the offensive pressure in the opening 45 minutes, recording 14 shots and six corner kicks. CSU Pueblo goalkeeper Peppi Niemi helped keep the Pack within striking distance with two first-half saves.
The Pack responded after halftime and began generating more pressure in the attacking third. CSU Pueblo earned back-to-back corner kicks early in the second half before Reedy entered the match in the 61st minute.
Reedy provided the equalizer in the 77th minute, finding the back of the net at the 76:32 mark for her third goal of the season. The goal was unassisted and pulled the ThunderWolves even at 1-1.
CSU Pueblo continued searching for the go-ahead goal following Reedy's equalizer. Solange Depirou put a shot on frame in the 82nd minute that was saved by Western goalkeeper Ashlyn Fitzpatrick, while Maya Bethelmie recorded the Pack's final attempt in the 87th minute.
Western finished with a 17-7 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, but the ThunderWolves limited the Mountaineers to just three shots in the second half after allowing 14 in the opening period. CSU Pueblo put two of its seven attempts on goal.
Reedy led the Pack with two shots and scored on her lone attempt on goal, while Depirou recorded CSU Pueblo's other shot on target. Niemi played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with three saves while allowing one goal.
