GOLDEN, Colo. — Colorado State University Pueblo dropped the second game of Friday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader to Colorado School of Mines, 5-2, at Jim Darden Field.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves fall to 13-19 overall and 5-10 in the RMAC, while Mines improved to 12-21 overall and 9-10 in the league. The Pack will look to avoid a series sweep on Saturday as the two teams conclude the weekend series with a nine-inning game starting at noon.
Mines opened Friday's doubleheader with a 14-13 win after plating four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Pack led 13-10 entering the bottom of the final frame.
Much like Friday's first game of the twin bill, the Pack struck first in the top of the third inning as junior centerfielder
Logan Kelly (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian) singled, advanced into scoring position, before junior third baseman
Jason Arriola (Riverside, Calif./Norco) delivered a sacrifice bunt to bring home Kelly with the game's opening run and give CSU Pueblo a 1-0 lead.
Mines answered quickly in the bottom half of the third inning, as they strung together three straight hits to plate three runs, including a 2-run single to left by Tyler Easter to take a 3-1 lead.
The Orediggers' lead grew to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Alex Dunagan off of senior
Luke Ruby (Fort Collins, Colo./Resurrection Christian), who started on the mound for the Pack.
Mines pushed its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth as Brody Duvall brought home a run on his RBI single to left off of sophomore reliever
Casey Clair (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Ellsworth CC), who was the third pitcher of the game for the Pack.
The Pack cut into the deficit in the seventh inning as senior second baseman
Taehyung Kim (Marana, Ariz./St. Cloud State) led off the frame with a solo home run to right, his third homer of the season, to pull within 5-2. However, the ThunderWolves were unable to generate further offense in the inning to seal Mines' third straight win in the series.
Sophomore first baseman
Tyler Clementz (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha) paced the Pack's seven-hit offensive attack with two hits, while Kelly had a hit and a run score and Kim had a home run and an RBI in the loss.
Ruby (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in four innings of work, and he walked five and struck out two. Redshirt freshman
Jack Prenni (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) tossed a scoreless inning in relief, and Clair allowed one run over the final inning.
Luke Parker (2-1) earned the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six over seven innings for Mines.
The ThunderWolves recorded seven hits in the contest, but left six runners on base as Mines finished with eight hits, five runs, and left seven runners on base. Duvall and Justin Holcomb each had two hits in the win.
