ALAMOSA, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo rewrote the record book here Sunday afternoon, setting new single-game school records for runs scored and RBI in a game as the ThunderWolves pounded out a season-high 27 hits in a wild 33-17 series finale victory over Adams State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at ASU Baseball Field.
The 33 runs bettered the old school record of 32 runs set at Colorado Christian in 2009, while the 31 RBI bettered the old school record of 29 set in that same game in 2009 at Colorado Christian. In addition, the 27 hits were tied for third-most in a game in school history, while the seven home runs are fourth-most on the school's single-game chart and the most since hitting eight home runs in a game at Adams State in 2022. Additionally, the 33 runs are tied for the fourth most runs in a game this season by a Division II team, while the 31 hits are tied for the most in a game this season by a Division II team.
Sunday's win helped the ThunderWolves win their third straight RMAC series as they improved to 24-22 overall and 16-12 in league play, while Adams State fell to 11-35 overall and 6-22 in the league.
ASU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple from Josh Parks, but the Pack offense answered back in the top of the second inning, sending 22 batters to the plate while recording 14 hits and scoring 17 runs to take a 17-1 lead. The explosive frame featured six home runs as junior leftfielder
Cooper Latino hit two in the inning, while junior third baseman
Jimmy Pelletier (Laval, Quebec/University of San Francisco), senior shortstop
Kyle Miller (Pueblo, Colo./Colorado Mesa), junior centerfielder
Logan Kelly (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian) and sophomore first baseman
Tyler Clementz (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha) had the other home runs in the inning. Kelly and Clementz's were 2-run homers, while Miller's was a 3-run shot. The 17 runs in the inning were the most scored by the Pack in an inning since tallying 10 runs in the fourth inning of a 19-3 home win last season over Adams State.
CSU Pueblo continued to pile on with four runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, one in the seventh, and six more in the eighth, including a 2-run homer by Pelletier to cap the scoring. Pelletier's homer was his team-leading ninth of the season.
Copper and Pelletier became the 82nd and 83rd Pack players in school history to hit two home runs in the same game.
Pelletier led the offensive barrage by going 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double, and tied a single-game record with eight RBI and five runs scored. Clementz finished 4-for-7 with six RBI and three runs scored, while Kelly went 4-for-6 with a home run, two RBI, and four runs scored. Miller added a 3-for-5 performance with a home run, double, four RBI, and three runs, while Latino scored four times and homered twice with three RBI. In addition, senior rightfielder
Jeremiah Sanchez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) and Clementz each tied the single-game school record for at-bats with seven.
Sanchez also collected four hits and three runs scored, while junior designated hitter
Jake Hixenbaugh (Atascadero, Calif./Monterey Peninsula) reached base four times and crossed the plate three times in the highest scoring game this season in the league.
Adams State totaled 16 hits and 17 runs in the contest, led by Ayden Tauscher's 4-for-6 day at the plate with five RBI, including a home run and triple. Osaias Hinojosa added two home runs and four RBI for the Grizzlies. Parks and Gunner Martinez also had two wins for ASU.
Senior Dom Corgiat (Brookfield, Ill./Tarleton State) picked up the win (1-0) on the mound in relief of redshirt senior hurler
Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway) as he tossed 1.1 innings and allowed five hits and five runs (four earned), while fanning two and walking none. Petersheim tossed three innings and allowed seven hits and seven runs (six earned), while walking two and fanning four.
Jacob Janata (0-7), who was the first of seven pitchers used by the Grizzlies in the game, took the loss for ASU as he tossed one-plus innings and allowed six and nine runs (four earned), while walking two and fanning none.
For the game, the Pack left seven runners on base and were 14-for-26 with runners in scoring position, while ASU also left seven runners on base, but committed four errors and was 8-for-19 with runners in scoring position. Six pitches also hit the Pack in the game, and that is tied for third-most in a game in school history.
