Wasmund and Doane Combined for Five of Pack's Six Goals Against Mountain Lions

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse team continued its five-game home stand here Thursday afternoon with a 23-6 setback to UCCS in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at ALG Stadium.

With the setback, the ThunderWolves drop their fifth straight game and fall to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the RMAC, while UCCS improved to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC.

UCCS' 23 goals were the most allowed by the Pack this season and the most goals scored by a team in a game this season in the RMAC. The previous high was 22 goals by UCCS in its win on March 20 against Fort Lewis.

The Pack, who fell 17-12 at UCCS on March 22, scored the game's first goal just 46 seconds into the contest thanks to freshman midfielder Ainsley Jackson (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon) finding the net for her 24th goal of the season.

From that point, the game belonged to the Mountain Lions as they scored nine unanswered goals after Jackson's tally to take 9-1 lead with 3:37 left in the first period. Junior midfielder Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) stopped UCCS' goal run with a free position goal with 2:38 left in the period to cut UCCS lead to 9-2.

The Mountain Lions, though, used a man-down goal by Sofia Watts with 28 seconds left to give UCCS a 10-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.

UCCS outscored the Pack 6-0 in the second period that featured a running clock for nearly eight-plus minutes to take a 16-2 halftime lead.

Wasmund paced the Pack offensively with a team-high three goals, including two free position scores and has now scored 41 career goals. Sophomore attacker Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) added two goals to push her season total to 30, which is tied for 12th on the school's single season charts. Doane has now scored 48 career goals, which is 13th on the school's all-time goal chart.

The Pack won the third period as they outscored UCCS, 3-2, thanks to two goals from Wasmund and an unassisted goal by Doane. The Mountain Lions lead 18-5 after three periods of play.

UCCS would score five of the final six goals in the fourth period to earn the 17-goal win. The Pack's lone goal in the final period came on free position by Doane with 3:32 left in the game.

For the game, the Pack was out shot, 32-20, and the UCCS won the ground ball battle (22-16) and the draw control battle (16-13).

Junior midfielder Sophia Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) and sophomore defender Kenzie Carpio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) each had three ground balls for the Pack, while Wasmund and redshirt freshman midfielder Sienna Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) each had four draws.

Ella Mills scored five goals, while Allison Hoffman and Brielle Fannin each scored four goals and combined for six assists. Watts and Charlotte Fannin each had three goals in the win. Nine different Mountain Lions scored goals in the game. UCCS also had 17 assists on 23 goals.

Junior goalie Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) recorded three saves and a caused turnover in 54 minutes in goal, while freshman Hannah Duffee (Bayport, Minn./St. Croix Preparatory Academy) added a save in nearly six minutes in goal.

Delaney Gnos (4-4) played 45 minutes in goal for UCSS and collected four saves and a ground ball, while Ellen Gernert played all 15 minutes in the fourth period in goal and had one save and caused turnover.

UCCS also held a 10-9 edge in caused turnovers with Carpio tallying a career-high three and Jackson recording two. CSU Pueblo committed 19 turnovers and UCCS had 14.

The Mountain Lions were also 17-for-18 on clears, while the Pack was 11-for-16 on clears.

CSU Pueblo will look to snap its season-high five game losing streak on Saturday, April 4 when they host 18th-ranked Regis for a noon match-up at ALG Stadium. The Rangers collected an 18-14 win over the Pack on March 20 in Denver.
